BLOOMINGTON — A 21-year-old Seymour native was murdered Thursday night in Bloomington during a drug deal gone bad, police report.
Skylar Maupin died at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital after the incident at an apartment complex in the 2000 block of North Walnut Street in Bloomington, according to a news release from Bloomington Lt. Ryan Pedigo.
Maupin, a 2016 graduate of Seymour High School, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, police said. A second man, whose name was not released, sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being shot in the shoulder. Pedigo said the man was listed in stable condition Friday morning.
Fort Wayne residents Jamarius Turnage, 25, and Cleodis Collins Jr., 24, have been arrested on murder, attempted murder and robbery charges and are being held in the Monroe County Jail.
The incident began when police were sent to the apartment after dispatchers received multiple 911 calls from people reporting gunshots. Those calls were reported at 9:16 p.m. Thursday.
During the investigation, police said they learned Turnage and Collins traveled to the apartment to purchase marijuana from Maupin and the other man but instead decided to rob the two.
An altercation between one of the suspects and Maupin or the injured man began in a bedroom before multiple shots were fired and Turnage and Collins left the apartment.
Once outside, one of the two returned to the front window of the apartment and fired multiple rounds into it.
One of those shots hit the injured man, who later provided identifying information about one of the suspects, police said.
Turnage and Collins then fled in a red passenger car northbound on Interstate 69.
The two were found parked in a driveway near Josephine and Dickson streets in Martinsville by officers with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.
The two were arrested, and police found a handgun in the floorboard of the vehicle.
