Fourteen Club Olympia swimmers competed in the 2019 Carmel Swim Club Winter Invitational last weekend at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.
Racing against 1,200 swimmers representing 34 clubs from 10 states, including California and New York, over three days, Club Olympia — with two of the 14 swimming unattached while they serve the 120-day transfer period — finished in 20th place with 182½ points.
Brady Beyer led the way, scoring 79 points and winning the Boys 13-14-year-old 200-yard breaststroke in 2 minutes, 9.65 seconds, ranking him third in the nation for 13-year-old boys and 31st in the nation for the 13-14 age group. Beyer also placed second in the 100 breaststroke and 400 individual medley, fourth in the 500 freestyle, ninth in the 200 IM, 16th in the 200 freestyle, 19th in the 100 backstroke and 27th in the 200 backstroke.
Nalanie Cortez scored 46 points by placing fourth in the Girls 13-14 200 butterfly, ninth in the 50 freestyle (fifth fastest overall), 100 freestyle (sixth fastest overall) and 200 freestyle (fifth fastest overall), 13th in the 500 freestyle, 20th in the 200 IM, 21st in the 400 IM and 22nd in the 100 butterfly.
Swimming in just five events in two days, Evan Patterson scored 36½ points by placing fifth in the Men’s Open 50 freestyle, seventh in the 100 butterfly, 11th in the 100 freestyle, 12th in the 100 breaststroke, and thirty-fourth in the 200 IM.
Scoring 21 points in the Boys 11-12 races, Misha Machavariani placed 10th in the 500 freestyle, 13th in the 50 breaststroke and 200 IM, 14th in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly, 19th in the 50 butterfly, 22nd in the 200 freestyle and 36th in the 100 freestyle.
Brooklyn Pendleton finished 21st in the Girls 10-and-under 50 backstroke, 33rd in the 200 IM, 50th in the 50 butterfly and 72nd in the 100 freestyle.
Matt Stuckwisch placed 22nd in the Men’s Open 50 freestyle, 30th in the 100 breaststroke and 35th in the 100 freestyle.
Connelly Furnish, swimming unattached, finished 29th in the Girls 10-and-under 200 freestyle, 31st in the 100 breaststroke, 43rd in the 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, 57th in the 50 backstroke, 69th in the 50 freestyle, 72nd in the 50 butterfly and 74th in the 100 backstroke.
Zoie Chandelkar placed 34th in the Girls 10-and-under 100 butterfly, 52nd in the 100 breaststroke, 59th in the 50 breaststroke, 60th in the 50 butterfly, 64th in the 50 backstroke, 73rd in the 100 freestyle, 78th in the 100 backstroke and 89th in the 50 freestyle.
Sanaa Kulkarni finished 37th in the Girls 10-and-under 100 butterfly, 59thh in the 200 freestyle, 60th in the 100 breaststroke, 72nd in the 50 breaststroke, 73rd in the 50 butterfly, 94th in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle and 107th in the 50 Freestyle.
Joshua Pendleton placed 37th in the Boys 10-and-under 200 IM, 59th in the 100 freestyle and 67thh in the 50 backstroke.
Lovely Panda finished 41st in the Girls 10-and-under 100 butterfly; 82nd in the 50 butterfly; 85th in the 100 breaststroke; 99th in the 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle; 100th in the 100 freestyle and 112th in the 50 freestyle .
Daniella Preston placed 55th in the Girls 11-12 100 backstroke, 59th in the 100 butterfly, 60th in the 500 freestyle, 61st in the 50 backstroke, 72nd in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM, 87th in the 100 freestyle and 91st in the 50 butterfly.
Grier Lane, swimming unattached, finished 66th in the Girls 10-and-under 50 freestyle, 72nd in the 50 backstroke, 74th in the 50 butterfly, 77th in the 100 backstroke, 81st in the 100 freestyle and 93rd in the 50 breaststroke.
Tony Machavariani placed 75th in the Boys 10-and-under 100 backstroke, 82nd in the 50 backstroke, 83rd in the 100 freestyle and 88th in the 50 freestyle.
Brooklyn Pendleton, Sanaa Kulkarni, Lovely Panda and Zoie Chandelkar just missed scoring in the Girls 10-and-under 200 freestyle relay, finishing in 18th place.
BASKETBALL
Chargers pick up victory
The Central seventh-grade boys pulled out a 34-30 win Thursday at Center Grove Central.
Connor Hensley led the Chargers (12-3) with 27 points. Phillip McKinley added six.
Panthers sweep Spartans
Jennings County’s seventh- and eighth-grade boys White teams swept Northside on Thursday.
Keegan Manowitz scored 15 points, and Lane Zohrlaut added 10 to lead the Panther eighth-graders (18-2) to a 44-29 win. Cole Sigler poured in 26 points, and Carter Kent added 11 to lead the Jennings seventh-graders (18-1) to a 50-36 victory.
WRESTLING
Jennings downs Pirates
Jennings County Middle School won 12 varsity matches by pin last weekend in a 75-46 victory against Greensburg.
Lane Kirchner (85 pounds), Brathan Malone (90), Carson Sorrells (105), Evan Sohocki (115), RJ Barberis (125), Sam Burkman (130), Nate Doty (135), Skyler Cohee (140), Bob Sargent (145), Christian Hernandez (155), Jacobi Clark (165) and Zell Giddens (220) all won by pin for the Panthers. Levi Marsh (100) won by major decision.
