Athletes of the Week

MALE

Drew Johnson, Columbus East senior basketball player

Johnson led the Olympians with 20 points in Saturday’s 44-42 loss to New Albany. Earlier in the week, he scored 12 points in a 50-35 win against Brownstown Central.

His performance last week: “I feel like our coaches got us prepared very well for the week. Even though New Albany wasn’t the way we wanted it to end, I think we played a really tough game and saw a lot of great things out of that one.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I have to eat peanut butter and jelly, and I take a nap usually and kind of chill out.”

Favorite drink: “Lemon Propel”

Favorite food: “Pizza”

Favorite book: “Farenheit 451”

Favorite class: “TV and Radio”

Role model: “My dad (Kevin Johnson). He’s the hardest worker I know. He’s passionate, loves everything he does and does it 100 percent, and that’s how I want to live my life.”

Best advice: “’You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.’ That’s been something I’ve focused on since I’ve tried to become more of a scorer for this team this year.”

Athletics goal: "I’d love for us to win the conference — and we still have a chance — and then the sectional, and from then on, see where it takes us. Those would be my team goals, and to play at the collegiate level would be my athletic goal for myself."

If you could travel anywhere: “Probably Hawaii. I heard it’s really cool. Obviously, it’s really pretty. I’ve never been there, so I’d like to go there.”

FEMALE

Betsy King, Columbus North junior swimmer

King won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events in Saturday’s Columbus North Sectional. She also advanced to state in a third event as part of the Bull Frogs’ winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Her performance last week: “I’m really happy with it. I went best times in both events, and I was really looking forward to that at the beginning of the season.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I always eat noodles.”

Favorite drink: “Lemonade”

Favorite food: “Grapes”

Favorite book: “The Book Thief”

Favorite class: “Biomedical Science”

Role model: “My sisters (Ashley and Sarah). They’ve push me all the time throughout my life.”

Best advice: “To keep your head up. Even if you go through bad times, you always just want to keep your head up and look forward to the future.”

Athletics goal: “To break the (school) records (in the 50 and 100 freestyle) and to swim in college.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Probably to Europe because they have a lot of good countries there, and it’s pretty interesting.”
