Companies hoping for applicants at Columbus Diversity Expo

Four of the area’s largest employers are hosting the Columbus Diversity Expo to encourage diverse job applicants to check out employment opportunities available locally.

Creating the expo came about after discussions with the African American Pastors Alliance and the NAACP about trying to get more African Americans access to work at Cummins, and also Toyota Material Handling, Faurecia and Honda, organizers said.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at McDowell Adult Education Center, 2700 McKinley Ave., said Mark Farney, U.S. Recruiting leader for Cummins.

Each of the four participating manufacturers are encouraging candidates to apply online in advance, and bring a resume to the event as each company will have recruiters on-site to do interviews.

Saturday’s career fair follows a workshop sponsored by the companies on Feb. 9 at McDowell, where applicants had the opportunity to work with professionals on resume writing, interview training and how to navigate each company’s employment application, Farney said.

Applicants will have a chance to learn more about what each company is looking for as far as current openings and to learn more about diversity recruiting efforts at each company, Farney said.

McDowell Education Center has set aside three classrooms for the Saturday event, where applicants will meet with company representatives, said Nickie Nolting, center adult education coordinator.
