Bartholomew County residents are reminded that the deadline for filing Personal Property Forms is May 15.
Real estate and personal property are taxed in Indiana based on self-assessment, according to Bartholomew County Assessor Ginny Whipple. The taxpayer is responsible for obtaining the appropriate forms and reporting all tangible personal property either used in their trade or business, or held as an investment.
While this includes office equipment, office furniture and industrial and farm machinery, vehicles subject to excise tax are not considered personal property, Whipple said.
If the value of the personal property is under $20,000, the owner is exempt from taxation. However, the taxpayer is still required to file a return, and could face penalties if the forms are not submitted by May 15.
Forms can either be picked up or submitted electronically in the assessor’s office, located on the second floor of the Bartholomew County Governmental Office building at Third and Franklin streets. Online forms are available at in.gov/dlgf/4971.htm.
