City yard waste program to start today

Columbus’ yard waste and debris program begins today.

The Chipper and Yard Waste Program seeks to collect yard waste, namely grass and leaves, from Columbus residents on trash day, according to Debbee Bolenbaugh, operations assistant at the Columbus Department of Public Works.

The program runs from today through Dec. 13.

“We’re looking for all yard waste, nothing woody,” Bolenbaugh said. “Fine green trimmings, leaves, grass clippings, anything you can compost.”

Branches, sticks and twigs should go in the trash container, she said. Yard waste should not be placed in recycling containers, she said.

Residents who wish to participate in the yard waste program must purchase a dark green container made by Toter.

Bolenbaugh said city residents can go to Lowe’s Home Improvement on 10th Street to purchase the container. The yard waste program is optional, she said. City residents are not required to participate.

Lesley Shell, a front-desk employee at Lowe’s, said the 10th Street location has the 64-gallon and 96-gallon containers in stock. Currently, the 96-gallon container costs $99.98 and the 64-gallon container costs $79.98, she said.

“(The program) officially starts on April 1,” Bolenbaugh said. “Our compost trucks will out and about on trash day.”
