BASEBALL

North game suspended

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North was three outs away from winning its Conference Indiana opener Thursday night at Bloomington North when the rain came and suspended play.

The Bull Dogs have a 3-1 lead with one out in the top of the seventh. The game will be competed at a yet-to-be determined date.

North’s Jakob Meyer allowed three hits and has nine strikeouts through six innings.

The Bull Dogs scored in the first when Homare Takauchi was hit by a pitch, went to third on a single by Austin Bode and scored on a single by Casper Clark. In the third, Bode reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a passed ball. Takauchi scored the third third run in fifth when he came home on an errant throw to third to try to nab him on a squeeze play.

Stars edge Eagles

BEDFORD — Brown County rallied from a 7-0 deficit after one inning, but came up just short in a 10-8 loss at Bedford North Lawrence.

Brandon Leslie went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Jake Riehl went 2 for 5 for the Eagles (2-2), who outhit the Stars 9-7. John Wayne Ziegler had three RBIs.

Spartans blank Cougars

GREENSBURG — Southwestern (Shelby) limited South Decatur to two hits in handing the Cougars a 13-0, five-inning Mid-Hoosier Conference loss.

Clayton McNealy and Zadun Sharp had the hits for the Cougars (0-2, 0-1).

Shiners top Trinity

SEYMOUR — Rising Sun scored twice in each of the first two innings and went on to hand Trinity Lutheran an 8-0 defeat.

The Cougars (1-3) were outhit 8-4.

SOFTBALL

East falls to Floyd

FLOYDS KNOBS — Columbus East led Floyd Central 4-3 after 4 1/2 innings, but the Highlanders scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and held on for a 5-4 Hoosier Hills Conference win.

Mady Foster went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Olympians (2-2, 0-1), who outhit Floyd Central 8-7.

Bears stop Bull Dogs

SHELBYVILLE — Columbus North scored five times in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a big deficit in a season-opening 8-5 loss at Shelbyville.

Starting pitcher Meghan Waggoner went 2 for 3 with two doubles for the Bull Dogs. Haylee Acton went 2 for 4 with a double before having to leave the game with a sprained ankle.

Twisters topple Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur opened its season with a 12-2 loss to Oldenburg Academy.

The Cougars managed four hits, including doubles by Sam Goodfellow and Megan Manlief.

Shiners run-rule Trinity

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran trailed only 1-0 after four innings, but Rising Sun scored six times in the fifth and six more in the sixth to pull away for a 13-2 six-inning win.

Jaryn Holtsclaw knocked in both runs for the Cougars (2-1).

Bull Dogs blank Owls

SEYMOUR — Columbus North did not lose a game at any of the three singles spots in rolling to a 5-0 win at Seymour.

Ashlie Wilson beat Sandra Cerino at No. 1 singles, Eva Chevalier downed Peyton Levine at No. 2 singles and Tiffany Fu topped Kirby Hill at No. 3 singles, all by 6-0, 6-0 scores for the Bull Dogs (2-0).

North’s Servane Cloteaux and Jaline Tay beat Kristina Grisan and Mallory Moore 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Shweta Srinivasan and Ali Bergman downed Avery Ragon and Madalyn Baurle 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Pirates blank Jets

GREENSBURG — Greensburg won four matches in straight sets and another by injury default in a 5-0 win against Hauser.

Abby Johnson fell to Raegan Rigney 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Andie Clark lost to Sarah Schneider 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles for the Jets (0-2). Carly Archer and Maddy Archer fell to to Bailey Menkedick and Kirsten Fong 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Brooke Hopkins and Aunaka Wasil lost to Claudia Westhafer and Emma Nobbe 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Hauser’s Melanie Taylor was winning 2-0 against Ellie Acra when she had to default because of a shoulder injury.

Shawe downs Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County won three close matches in a 4-1 win against Madison Shawe.

Ellie Hearne beat Abigail Hill at No. 1 singles, and Carmen Kopitzke downed Kelly Hesse at No. 3 singles, both by 7-5, 7-5 scores for the Panthers (2-0). Callie Wilder and Abigail DeCamp blanked Lina Leatherman and Jessica Lopez 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Courtney Lykins and Elizabeth Ertel topped Caroline Grote and Krista Snodgrass 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings’ Reagan Brown fell to Phoebe Grote 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Spartans top Trinity

SEYMOUR — Southwestern (Shelby) pulled out a pair of three-set wins to claim a 4-1 win at Trinity Lutheran.

Regan Cain won 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Cougars (1-2). Abby Schult fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles,  Sarah Lemming lost 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Lauren Fleetwood and Cassidy Burnside fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and Katelyn Mensendiek and Rebecca Brown lost 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

BOYS GOLF

Eagles best Jets

Parker VanNess won medalist honors with a 39 to lead Brown County to a 183-206 win against Hauser at Clifty Creek.

Curtis Lookebill carded a 43 for the Eagles. Peyton Proctor added a 48, Cooper VanNess shot 53 and Rex Watters had a 62.

Ethan Wallace led the Jets with a 49. Justin Stafford added a 51, Sam Johnson and Justice Gilliland each shot 53 and Keagan Miller had a 61.

Panthers win tri match

GREENSBURG — Bryce Kirchner carded a 1-over-par 37 to lead Jennings County to a tri-match win at North Branch. The Panthers finished with a 168 to 177 for Greensburg and 197 for North Decatur.

Adam Leach carded a 41 for Jennings. Joe Kelley added a 43, Brett Silvey shot 47, Weston Miller had a 50 and Zach Bingham finished with a 52.

TRACK AND FIELD

Panthers take second

SEYMOUR — Jennings County’s boys and girls both finished second in a tri meet at Seymour.

Bedford North Lawrence won the boys meet with 80 points to 44 for the Panthers and 34 for the host Owls. Seymour took the girls meet with 67 points to 64 for Jennings and 35 for BNL.

Carter Leak led the Panther boys with wins in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 43.95 seconds) and 3,200 (10:26.52). Lane Elsner took the 800 (2:05.16) and Jennings captured the 4×800 relay (8:43.9).

Kayla Truesdell won the shot put (42 feet, 5 inches) and discus (121-2), Sam Sproles took the long jump (16-4) and 400 (1:03.4) and Izzy Daugherty captured the 100 (13.02) and 200 (26.80) to lead the Panther girls.

Eagles finish third

ELLETTSVILLE — Brown County’s boys and girls both finished third in a tri meet at Edgewood.

The host Mustangs won the boys meet with 70 1/2 points to 55 for Martinsville and 39 1/2 for the Eagles. Edgewood took the girls meet with 83 1/2 points to 49 for Martinsville and 19 1/2 for Brown County.

Ricky Stanley won the pole vault (9-6), Marino Dolph took the 1,600 (4:47.67) and Jackson McPheeters captured the 800 (2:05.28) to lead the Eagle boys. The girls got second-place finishes from Natalie Suding in the pole vault (7-6), Christy Sebastian in the 200 (27.96) and the 4×400 relay team (4:33.55).
