Police arrest local man sought in case of missing woman after a standoff

A local man who was connected to a case involving a woman reported missing by her family was arrested after a short standoff at a Bartholomew County mobile home park.

Investigators from the Columbus Police Department were searching Wednesday for Stephanie Hudak, 36, Columbus, and her boyfriend Steven “Bobby” Burton, 41, of Columbus and asked for the public’s assistance in locating them due to concerns of the nature of her disappearance, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Police were told that Hudak had last been seen Tuesday night at her home with her family, but was not there Wednesday morning.

Hudak was entered as a missing person and a Silver Alert was issued in an attempt to locate Hudak.

Investigators followed up on a tip from the public on Wednesday afternoon and located Hudak, who was uninjured, at a mobile home in the 10000 block of Legal Tender Road, Harris said.

Officers determined that Burton was also inside the mobile home,  but he refused to surrender to law enforcement, Harris said.

A search warrant to enter the home was obtained and officers utilized a police canine to search for Burton. With the assistance of Columbus Police K-9 Bane, officers located Burton hiding under a mattress inside a bedroom in the mobile home, Harris said.

Burton was taken into custody without further incident and later remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on a Bartholomew County warrant as well as an Indiana Parole Warrant. The incident remains under investigation.
