North wins conference
BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North scored victories in the top heat or flight in all five events Saturday to claim its third consecutive Conference Indiana championship.
The Bull Dogs finished with 119 points. Host Bloomington North and Terre Haute South tied for second with 99.
Will King won Flight 1 of the long jump (16 feet, 3 1/2 inches), and Noah Algee took Flight 1 of the shot put (44-3 1/2). Reed Duncan captured Heat 1 of the 100 meters (12.94 seconds), Max Wilson won Heat 1 of the 400 (57.94) and Jackson Eaken, Duncan, Anthony Ashcroft and Sam Russell took the boys 4×100 relay (56.72).
Wilson also finished second in Flight 1 of the long jump (16-3), Russell took second in Heat 1 of the 400 (59.29) and Marisol Castenada, Alana Cook, Tanner Johnson and Elizabeth Dwyer were second in the girls 4×100 relay. 1:07.67). James Dwyer finished third in Flight 3 of the long jump (10-2 3/4), Cook took third in Heat 2 of the 100 (16.17) and Randall Watts was third in Heat 3 of the 400 (1:15.18).
“The kids did absolutely amazing today,” North coach Nathan VanDeventer said. “It was cold, it was windy and I didn’t know how the kids were going to react today, but they did a great job of staying focused. They definitely earned it today.”
Panthers 2nd, East 4th
Jennings County finished second, and Columbus East took fourth in Saturday’s Hoosier Hills Conference meet at East.
Bedford North Lawrence won with 127 points. The Panthers finished with 118, followed by Seymour with 103, the Olympians with 89 and Floyd Central with 77.
Jennings’ Branden Harris won Flight 1 of the long jump (17-4), Chase Laman took Flight 3 of the shot (19-1 1/2) and Lance Bailey captured Heat 3 of the 400 (1:12.29). Raul Ruiz finished second in Heat 3 of the 100 (17.33), Owen Bonesteel took second in Heat 2 of the 400 (1:12.98), Ethan Smith was second in Heat 3 of the 400 (1:15.92), Ferguson and Ruiz tied for second in Flight 2 of the long jump (11-8) and the Panthers finished second in the boys 4×100 relay (53.31).
East’s Takira Brown won Flight 2 of the long jump (12-9), Nathan Day took head 2 of the 100 (12.89) and Matthew Wilson captured Heat 3 of the 100 (15.62). Marin Wieneke finished second in Heat 2 of the 100 (14.47) and Dyamond Imlay, Catherine Wolf, Alexia Robinette and Stella Arnholt were second in the girls 4×100 relay (1:07.55)
GIRLS Tennis
North wins Avon invite
AVON — Eighth-ranked Columbus North beat three ranked opponents Saturday to win the Avon Crossroads Classic. The Bull Dogs edged No. 10 Penn 3-2 and beat No. 25 Jasper 4-1 and No. 20 Avon 3-2.
Ashlie Wilson at No. 1 singles and Eva Chevalier at No. 2 singles both went 3-0, winning all three of their matches in straight sets for the Bull Dogs (13-1). Shweta Srinivasan went 2-0 at No. 3 singles with a pair of three-set victories.
Servane Colteaeux and Tiffany Fu went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles and 0-1 at No. 1 doubles. Jaline Tay and Cassidy May went 1-0 at No. 2 doubles, and Tay and Ali Bergman went 0-2 at No. 1 doubles. Paige Bishop was 0-1 at No. 3 singles.
East splits matches
PLAINFIELD — Columbus East split a pair of matches in the Plainfield Invitational Saturday, falling to Franklin Central 3-2 and beating Ben Davis 3-2.
Megna Chari won her No. 2 singles match against Franklin Central and teamed with Kathryn Hodzen for the first time this season to win their No. 1 doubles match against Ben Davis. Louna Prince went 2-0 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (7-5).
Cathrine Millwood and Emie Kiser won at No. 2 doubles against Ben Davis. Hozden fell at No. 1 singles, Ayano Nomura and Kiser lost at No. 1 doubles, and Millwood and Christina Marco fell at No. 2 doubles against Franklin Central. Nomura and Marco lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles against Ben Davis.
Eagles fall twice
MUNCIE — Brown County dropped 5-0 matches to Fort Wayne Carroll and Terre Haute North in Saturday’s Delta Invitational.
Baelyn Koester at No. 1 singles, Meg Smith at No. 2 singles and Katie Goodwin at No. 3 singles all lost two straight-set matches for the Eagles (1-10). Olivia Baughman and Cassidy Davis at No. 1 doubles and Claire Dannelley and Emilia Koester at No. 2 doubles also fell twice in straight sets.
Lancers drop pair
SCOTTSBURG — Edinburgh fell to Scottsburg 5-0 Friday and Corydon Central 3-2 Saturday in the Scottsburg Invitational.
Destiney Ramey at No. 1 singles and Maddie McGaha and Alyssa Funkhouser at No. 2 doubles each won their matches against Corydon for the Lancers (2-8). Haven Link at No. 2 singles, Emily Chappelow at No. 3 singles and Bethany Burton and Katie Roberts at No. 1 doubles all went 0-2.
Trinity takes runner-up
MADISON — With Southwestern (Hanover) up on Trinity Lutheran by a set in three matches of Saturday’s Southern Conference Tournament final when rain halted play, the Rebels were declared the champion and the Cougars the runner-up.
Trinity beat Madison Shawe 3-2 in the semifinals. Sarah Lemming at No. 2 singles, Regan Cain at No. 3 singles and Katelyn Mensendiek and Bekah Brown at No. 2 doubles won in straight sets for the Cougars (3-7). Abby Schult at No. 1 singles fell in two sets, and Lauren Fleetwood and Cassidy Burnside at No. 1 doubles lost in a third-set supertiebreaker.
BOYS golf
North finishes third
PERU — Luke Schneider fired a 72 to tie for second individually Saturday and lead Columbus North to a third-place finish in the Hall of Fame Classic at Rock Hollow.
The Bull Dogs finished with a 312 team total. Center Grove won with a 301, and Floyd Central took second with a 309.
Drew Smith carded a 78, and Henry Kiel added a 79 for North. Luke VanDeventer shot 83, and Jackson Kerber had a 94.
Panthers claim fourth
JEFFERSONVILLE — Bryce Kirchner won medalist honors with a 73 Saturday to lead Jennings County to a fourth-place finish in the Madison Invitational at Sunrise.
The Panthers finished with a 364 team total. Corydon Central won with a 335 to 341 for Madison and 350 for Southwestern (Hanover).
Brett Silvey carded an 86 for Jennings. Zach Bingham added a 99, Connor Cook shot 106 and Kyle Corum had a 127.
On Friday, Adam Leach won medalist honors with a 42 to lead the Panthers to a 181-200 win against Jeffersonville at Jeffersonville Elks. Kirchner carded a 43, Joe Kelley and Weston Miller each shot 48, Silvey added a 51, Cook shot 52 and Bingham had a 58.
Bull Dogs get sixth
BEDFORD — The Columbus North and Jennings County each played a second unit in Saturday’s Bedford North Lawrence Invitational at Otis Park, while Columbus East played three golfers.
North finished sixth with a 356, and Jennings took 13th with a 412. Bloomington North won with a 315.
Jacob Niedbaksli led the Bull Dogs with an 86. Cameron Ziegler and Damon Gregory each shot 89, Conner Williams added a 92 and Michael Giambiani had a 95.
Leach led the Panthers with a 90. Miller carded a 104, Kelley added a 107, Chad Cooper shot 111 and Dan Maschino had a 115.
Adrian Adams led the Olympians with an 84. Leyton Erfmeier added a 100 and Cole Schaefer had a 109.
SOFTball
North, Martinsville split
MARTINSVILLE — Columbus North won the first game 3-1 and led the second game 6-2, but Martinsville rallied for an 8-6 victory to salvage a doubleheader split on Saturday.
Rachel Cowan threw a two-hitter and went 2 for 4 in the first game. Sierra Norman went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Bailey Lofton went 2 for 4.
Lofton went 2 for 3, Norman went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Brooke Bruin went 2 for 4 in the second game for the Bull Dogs (4-7). Emalee Heafner had two RBIs.
Stars blank Olympians
BEDFORD — Bedford North Lawrence scored two runs in each of the first two innings Friday and went on to hand Columbus East a 7-0 HHC defeat.
Katie Taylor went 2 for 3 for the Olympians (4-11, 0-3).
Eagles shut down Knights
BRAZIL — Emma Summers threw a two-hitter and struck out 18 Saturday to lead Class 3A No. 9 Brown County to a 4-0 win at Northview.
Myka Snyder went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Eagles (16-0).
Lancers sweep Jackets
MORRISTOWN — Edinburgh rolled to a Mid-Hoosier Conference doubleheader sweep of Morristown on Friday, winning 19-1 and 16-2 five-inning games.
In the opener, Emma Wade went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, Paige Burton went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, Shelby Graham went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Sidney Beier went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs and Catey Streeval went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Graham threw a three-hitter.
In the second game for the Lancers, Beier went 3 for 3 with a double, two homers and two RBIs, Grace Joiner went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and the pair combined on a three-hitter. Wade went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, Taylor Littiken went 2 for 3, Gracie Long went 2 for 4 and Graham added two RBIs.

Jets run-rule Spartans
HOPE — Aaron Mee threw a two-hitter and went 2 for 3 with a double Friday to lead Hauser to a 12-1, five-inning MHC win against Southwestern (Shelby).
Jackson Paradise went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Parker Eickbush went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Jets (9-3, 7-0). Trey Johnson also had two RBIs.
Lancers rout Jackets
MORRISTOWN — Coltan Henderson threw a three-hitter and went 3 for 3 with three RBIs Friday to lead Edinburgh to an 18-0, five-inning MHC win.
Evan Goddard went 4 for 4 with a triple, and Zach Giles went 3 for 3 with two home runs and two RBIs for the Lancers (2-9, 2-5). Riley Palmeter went 3 for 3 with two RBIs; and Bryce Burton went 2 for 4 with a triple, a home run and four RBIs. Austin Streeval went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Edinburgh was winning the second game 13-2 after two innings when it was suspended because of darkness. The completion date has not been determined.
Eagles split pair
Brown County bounced back from an 11-0, five-inning loss Friday at Indian Creek with a 10-0, five-inning victory Saturday at Eastern Greene.
Eli Snider and Justin Partyka combined on a two-hitter, and John Wayne Ziegler went 3 for 4 against Eastern. Brandon Leslie went 2 for 2, and Bryce Walker and Justin Partyka each had two RBIs.
Panthers fall twice
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, falling to Whiteland 6-3 in eight innings and 8-2.
Josh Pettit went 2 for 4 with a triple, and Cody Wilson went 2 for 4 in the opener. In the second game, Pettit went 2 for 4 with a home run, and Wilson went 2 for 4 with two doubles for the Panthers (4-6).
