Driver arrested after hitting median, sign

A local man was arrested early Saturday morning on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he was accused of striking the median and crashing into a road sign on 17th Street.

Columbus police were sent to a report of a driver traveling the wrong way on 17th Street near Orinoco Avenue at 5:10 a.m. Saturday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. A short time later, police learned the driver had hit the median and a road sign in the middle of the street, Harris said.

Officers found the black passenger car a short time later near 21st Street and Newton Street where they spoke to the driver, Kobrin N. Lopotosky, 21, of 1426 Seventh St., Harris said. After Lopotosky exited the vehicle, the officers noticed his speech was slurred and he had difficulty maintaining his balance, Harris said.

After Lopotosky failed several field sobriety tests, he was transported to the Columbus Police Department where he provided a breath sample of .174 percent, more than twice the legal limit, Harris said.

Lopotosky was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a property damage crash, Harris said.

Lopotosky was released from the Bartholomew County Jail after posting $7,500 bond, jail officials said.
