Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies are warning the public that scammers are using the sheriff’s department number to make calls demanding money for missing jury duty.
The scammer is telling those who receive the call that he or she missed jury duty and must provide some sort of financial compensation or risk being arrested, deputies said. At least one of the recipients of these calls was advised to take the money to a local grocery store, deputies said.
No one from Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department will call demanding money from anyone who misses jury duty, deputies said.
If you receive one of these calls, you should just hang up, deputies said.
Deputies also advised to refrain from giving any personal information over the telephone as a precaution to deter identity theft, bank account fraud, credit card fraud or other criminal uses of their personal information.
