Bull Dogs sweep Grizzly Cubs on senior night

Columbus North had a chance to fine-tune some things for next week’s girls and boys sectional competition when it hosted Franklin on senior night Wednesday.

The Bull Dogs breezed to a pair of wins. North’s boys won 100-32, and the girls were victorious 95-37.

“It was good for the seniors to go out with a win tonight,” North coach Lou Sipe said. “We have kids that work really hard. We have some kids that have come on here of late. We’re excited to compete at the sectional level.”

Two Bull Dog boys seniors won indivdiual events on senior night. Hunter Spalding, who normally runs the 100 meters and 4×100 relay instead ran the 400 for the first time and won in 52.1.

Spalding also finished second in the 200 (23.7) and ran on the winning 4×400 relay team (3:41.2).

“It’s really special just being back on the home field, knowing that it’s senior night,” Spalding said. “We had nice weather, and I thought we all performed pretty well. This was a good way to get us back in shape for sectional. We know that Center Grove is probably our biggest competition going into sectional, but I think maybe we can repeat history like last year.”

The other North senior to win was John Sluys. He captured the 3,200 in 9:52.

“I felt it was a hard race,” Sluys said. “It was a day where we went out hard and put for the effort and went for it. My plan for this meet was to hone for that (sectional).”

The Bull Dogs had a pair of double-winners. Preston Terrell took the high jump (6-4) and long jump (19-9), and Ben Malone captured the 110 hurdles (15.9) and 200 (23.6).

Other winners for the North boys were Tucker Smith in the shot put (55-11 1/2), David Sandusky in the discus (130-8), Matt Newell in the 1,600 (4:30.8), Felix Lawson in the 300 hurdles (43.6) and the 4×100 relay team (45.1).
