Local professor receives President’s Award

Ivy Tech Community College has awarded Thomas A. Sobat, a biology professor, with the President’s Award, the highest honor given to faculty by Ivy Tech.

Sobat teaches at Ivy Tech’s Columbus campus. He is one of 19 recipients selected across the college’s statewide campuses.

The recipients were selected based on nominations from students, their fellow faculty members and Ivy Tech staff. Now in its 36th year, the program recognizes one full-time faculty member at each campus for reflecting Ivy Tech’s mission. Each winner receives an Ivy Oscar and a $1,000 professional development grant.

In his nomination letter, Chancellor Steven Combs cited Sobat’s “strong commitment to providing students with the best academic experience possible, including engaging and educating them on the advantages of out-of-class service learning opportunities to enhance their educational goals and objectives.”

The group of award winners will be formally recognized on June 21 at an annual event. Along with being recognized with the President’s Award, each of the 19 winners are eligible for the Founder’s Award, which is presented to one outstanding Ivy Tech faculty member throughout the state. The recipient of the Founders Award will be announced at the June event.
