Corrections officer injured after altercation in jail

Bradley A. McCrae

A Bartholomew County jail inmate has been accused of attacking a corrections officer who was trying to remove him from his cell.

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies said the female corrections officer was punched in the back of the neck and head by jail inmate Bradley McRae, 23, at 2:18 p.m. Saturday, deputies said.

McRae was then detained with the help of other jail corrections officers, deputies said.

“This will not be tolerated,” said Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers. “If we need to
lock down every block in the jail and adhere only to federal guidelines as to the amount of time that inmates can leave their cells each day (which is only one hour), then that is what we will do. I take the safety of our employees seriously and I will make sure that we take all necessary measures to keep them safe.”

A detailed report of this incident will be sent to the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office seeking charges in the incident, deputies said.

McRae was arrested on May 24 by the Bartholomew County Joint Narcotics  Enforcement Team and was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of dealing in a narcotic drug, driving while suspended with a prior conviction and a warrant for dealing in a narcotic drug.

McRae is accused of bring heroin and fentanyl from Cincinnati, Ohio to be sold in Bartholomew County, deputies said.

The officer was treated and released at PromptMed for non-life threatening injuries and has since returned to work.
