A local man was arrested Friday afternoon after he was accused of crashing into a Columbus city vehicle and then biting a Good Samaritan who attempted to detain him.

Columbus police were sent to the area of 22nd Street and Cottage Avenue at 12:20 p.m. Friday about a vehicle crash, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When officers arrived, they noted that a Jeep sport utility vehicle, driven by Tre X. Vires, 24, of 1727 California St., was on its side. Vires was being detained by a witness after he attempted to flee to crash scene, Harris said.

The witness told police that Vires tried to punch him and later bit him on the arm during a struggle before officers arrived, Harris said.

The officers observed a beer bottle near Vires’ vehicle and noted that Vires had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, Harris said.

Vires was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where a blood draw was conducted. Vires was placed under arrest and later transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was held on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and battery, Harris said.

Vires was being held at the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $6,000 bond, jail officials said.

Two people in the city-owned medical transport vehicle were slightly injured as a result of the crash and were treated at Columbus Regional Hospital, Harris said.
