Columbus Transit to host route study open house

ColumBUS buses feature the city's iconic Dancing C's images.

The public has another chance to offer input about ColumBUS Transit for an ongoing transit route study at an open house next week. The open house will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first floor Cal Brand Meeting Hall at Columbus City Hall, 123 Washington St. A formal presentation at 5:30 p.m. will be followed by an opportunity for audience members to provide comments and ask questions. Anyone can attend the open house at any time during the hours of the event. The Columbus transit route study, completed by Indianapolis-based Lochmueller Group, is an in-depth review of the routes and operations of the anticipated new transit center for ColumBUS Transit, according to an executive summary of the draft study. The new transit center will be located at 13th Street and Hutchins Ave., approximately two miles from the existing Mill Race transit center. The draft study says a new transit center will require a “large-scale restructuring of ColumBUS service.” The present route designations will to some extent be modified. Maps of proposed transit routes will be displayed in the meeting hall. The public is encouraged to mark up the maps to indicate their preferences and suggest alternatives. Comment forms will also be available to those who wish to offer additional input. Transit staff and consultants for the study will be on hand to any questions. Copies of the draft study and maps of the proposed routes may currently be viewed in the lobby of Mill Race Transit Center, 850 Lindsey St. The public may provide comments at this location until Aug. 2. The draft study is also available online along with a comment box at columbus.in.gov/columbus-transit/2019/07/02/transit-route-study-open-house-july-23. This is the city’s first transit study in about five years. Additional questions about the open house and the study can be directed to ColumBUS Transit coordinator Cindy Setser at 812-376-2506.
