North grad, senior to meet in final

The finals are set for the city tournament’s Men’s Open singles championship, which will be played today at Columbus North.

In one semifinal match Tuesday, North graduate Anthony Sanders defeated Ryan Hammer 6-4, 6-2. The second-seeded Sanders broke serve early in the set to lead 3-2, but Hammer got back on serve to take a 4-3 lead. Sanders then rallied to pick up the final three games of the set.

In the other semifinal match, North incoming senior Bhavey Jain fended off top-seed Chris Deaton’s comeback attempt in the second set to prevail 6-3, 7-6 (2) in a match that lasted more than two hours.

After finishing his singles match, Sanders had to play in a semifinal doubles match.

"I’m going to make sure I get plenty of rest," Jain said. "Anthony is someone I look up to a lot. We play a lot together in our clinics. He’s someone that has helped me improve a lot over the summer, so this is going to be different, it’s not going to be our casual clinics match. I’m really looking forward to playing him, and I have lots of respect for him and his game."

The men’s singles final is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today.

In the Men’s 45 Doubles final, Pete Khensouri and Scott Bailey went to a third-set tiebreaker against Jody Littrell and Tony Gambaiani, but Khensouri and Bailey prevailed 7-5, 4-6, (10-5).

In the Men’s 4.0 Doubles semifinal matches, Anvay Atrum and Amritanshu Kar beat Larry Bailey and Brett Kelch 7-5, 7-6 (4). David Chader and Abhijit Dawle defeated Kevin Johnson and Jim St. John 6-2, 6-3.

In the Women’s 4.0 Doubles division, Bev Chinn and Karen Day won against Annie Baugh and Kacey Moran 6-3, 6-2. In Men’s 3.0 Doubles, Curtis Burton and Jason Johnson defeated Kenneth Shim and Jaeheon Shim 5-7, 6-2 10-5.

The men’s doubles semifinal matches were not completed by press time. The final is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today.
