Robert Lee Spurgin, 95, of Columbus, died on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at American Village in Indianapolis.

Born to the late William and Dorothy Spurgin in Columbus, IN, on August 13, 1923, Robert was the youngest of two children. He is preceded in death by his older sister, Faye, and his beloved wife and best friend of 69 years, Phyllis (Torrenga) Spurgin. He leaves his daughter, Judy (Ted) Reasoner; two granddaughters, Kelly Reasoner and Katee (Bradley) Schrage; four great-grandchildren, Andrew Herbertz and Luke, Norah, and Hadley Schrage; a niece, Linda (Kevin) Monroe,and many friends. Everyone that Mr. Spurgin met became an instant and life-long friend to him.

During World War II, Mr. Spurgin served his country overseas and became classified as a sharpshooter. He earned an EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars. In 2016, Mr. Spurgin was a guest on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

After his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Mr. Spurgin returned home to marry his beloved bride. Mr. Spurgin worked at Columbus First National Bank for forty-two years. He remained an active member of the Nugent and Custer Foundations until his death and previously served the Columbus City Park Department Board In his early years after WWII, Mr. Spurgin would also have an annual Christmas Tree Farm Business in Brown County, IN.

Mr. Spurgin enjoyed golfing until he was well into his 80’s. He also enjoyed his daily walks and bike rides. Mr. Spurgin would wave to every person he saw as he walked his dog around the block. When he was at home, Mr. Spurgin enjoyed spending time in his garden growing flowers and tomatoes. He also loved watching birds and had many bird feeders outside of multiple windows.

Mr. Spurgin’s funeral will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Tyler Tolbert officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening, August 2 and also from 10:00 a.m. till time of service Saturday. Entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum.
