Letter: Silence by Republicans on Trump’s remarks troubling

From: Michael Greven

The recent outbursts by Donald Trump frankly come as no surprise. Race baiting and racism is nothing new to Trump, so it is to be expected that he would choose to say disparaging things against people of color or communities of color. No one has checked him or called him on his transgressions in the past, so why would he expect to be checked now that he is the president of the United States?

No matter how you deal the cards, he is in a very powerful position. Regrettably, the all-too-familiar refrain from the Republican Party leadership is fundamentally quiet. That is alarming, but when you take a look at the Republican leadership the fact that they grovel so willingly should come as no surprise. Mitch McConnell, theoretical leader of the Senate, but in fact groveler in chief, comes by groveling naturally. How else could he have he succeeded so definitively in leading his state, Kentucky, to the celebrated position of having the highest number of opioid overdose-related deaths? He must have spent a lot of time on his knees groveling to the leaders of big pharma for election campaign money in lieu of focusing on the health and well-being of the residents of his state. But his knees were already sore as he groveled ceaselessly to provide a huge tax break to the wealthiest 1% of Americans.

The tax cut has been a fiscal disaster no one is talking about because the headlines are full of the crass and disgusting headlines created by Trump in order that we not focus on the debt and financial day of reckoning. That Mitch McConnell has not stood up to Trump shows what a spineless hypocrite he is. A Christian who does not have the spine to call the president on his unChristian and unAmerican remarks. His Republican colleagues line up behind him like the lemmings on their way to their last swim. Our U.S. Sens. Braun and Young have yet to utter any words of condemnation. Rather, we have Senator Braun spinelessly saying he didn’t like the content of the remarks. Impressive. Nothing from Senator Young that I have heard about or seen. Given his military background, I would have expected more from Senator Young. Disappointing.

Today our president stands quietly and smiling as others yell “send her back” at a campaign rally. Could they have been yelling to send others backs, such as Italians, Catholics, Irish, Chinese, Latinos, Indians, Germans, blacks, gays, transgenders or Jews? You better believe that crowd could have given that the leader of the nation let the chant go on and did not condemn it. One can wordsmith “racist” all they want, but there is little wordsmithing needed to accurately describe Trump’s behavior as “pitiful.” Trump: pitiful leader, pitiful Christian, pitiful American and also very clearly a pitiful and dangerous racist. Wake up America, Trump’s words of hate do us no good at all.
