Educator, students compete in FCCLA
A Columbus East High School family and consumer science teacher and two students received top honors at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference in June.
Karen Nading, a family and consumer science teacher and FCCLA chapter adviser at Columbus East High School, was named one of 13 Adviser Mentor honorees at the conference.
FCCLA’s Advisor Mentor program recognizes outstanding experienced Family and Consumer Sciences educators who excel within family and consumer sciences and FCCLA.
“For myself, it culminates a career in FCCLA,” Nading said. “I’ve done FCCLA for about 18 years. In FCCLA, family is core and how we give back to the community is just another aspect.”
Nading has also received the 2018 Indiana FCCLA President’s Award.
Columbus East seniors Nyah Jessie and Sophia Ramiries competed in the National STAR Event Competition at the conference. The team received silver in the chapter service division. They made, along with Nading’s interpersonal relations class and District 11 FCCLA chapters, 12 baby blankets donated to Clarity, a local pregnancy care center.
More than 4,700 FCCLA members competed in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events at the conference.
STAR Events are competitive events in which members are recognized for their proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. Both youth and adults work together in managing the events and serving as evaluators of the participants.
“I would have gone to the end of the earth for these two girls to receive this honor,” Nading said. “It reflects what they learned and their giving back spirit.”
The national conference was held in Anaheim, California, from June 30 to July 4 and drew more than 8,700 FCCLA members, advisers, alumni, and guests — the largest attendance in the organization’s history.
