A Columbus police officer and a public works employee were presented with letters of commendation today at the Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety Meeting for helping save the life of a city employee who was choking on a piece of food.
On July 10, CPD Officer Brian Voyles, a six-year veteran of the department, was on patrol in the area of State and Pence streets when he was flagged down by Rudy Zeigler, a Columbus Department of Public Works employee.
Zeigler informed Officer Voyles that his co-worker was choking on a piece of food and unable to breathe. Working with Zeigler, Voyles administered the Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodged the obstruction allowing the co-worker to breathe on his own.
Columbus Chief of Police Jon Rohde said, “Mr. Zeigler’s quick thinking combined with the life saving measures administered by Officer Voyles were critical to this positive outcome.”
