Around Town – August 7

Orchids to …

• Bud Heron for his column about Wallace, which is so timely and frighteningly similar to what is happening today, from a reader.

• Ron’s Tree Service for patience and expertise in taking out the tree and stump, from the Bennett family.

• the Bartholomew County Historical Society Museum on Third Street for its wonderful new exhibit.

• family and friends for driving to Lebanon for my 90th grand birthday party and for the 115 cards I received, because it was all greatly appreciated, from Mary Lou Washler.

• Petersville United Methodist Church for helping Clifty Creek Elementary School pack their student take-home folders and helping provide the staff breakfast.

• Athens Church for helping Clifty Creek Elementary get their new teacher rooms ready and for the Popsicles provided for the open hose.

• researchers whose studies show immigrants have a lower rate of criminality than those born in the U.S.

• the generous members of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church who collected school supplies and delivered 22 big boxes to every teacher at Smith Elementary School.

Onions to …

• a politician who foolishly boasted about trade wars being “easy to win.”

• those that don’t realize that once a state road enters the city, the responsibility for it remains with the state.

• those that don’t realize that it’s U.S. companies and consumers who pay the tariffs, not the Chinese.

• Washington politicians killing gun-safety legislation.

• the president for reading a speech that has nothing to do with everything else he’s done and said over the time preceding it.

• the judge giving a sentence of 20 years to one of the president’s followers who sent pipe bombs to prominent Democrats.

• the two mass shootings that included the deadliest hate crime against Latinos in modern American history.

• those who create presidential campaign ads using the word “invasion” to describe illegal immigrants as a growing threat.

• those who think the right of every person to own a rapid-fire killing machine is more sacred than the lives of those killed.

• the city for waiting until the week before school starts to redo Westenedge Drive, which will cause a lot of problems and disruptions for kids and parents taking kids to school.

• people who don’t understand that it’s the shooter, not the gun.

• the Democrats who are against the border wall but have no answer to the question “What is your solution or plan to control the influx of illegal migrants?”
