Around Town – August 8

Orchids to …

• First Baptist Church for providing cookies and lemonade to the students and parents of Richards Elementary School on Monday evening.

• The Republic for the “Bye, Bye Birdie” photo in the Wednesday “Looking Back” section, from one of the players in the play.

• people who submit Orchids, adding just a little bit more positivity to a much too negative world.

• painters Dave Newland and Jared Lemert for the perfect job on our house and all their extra help and kindness, from the Bovas.

• Bob Woodruff for mowing my grass while I was visiting my granddaughters in Tennessee.

• Lori and Tonnie for jumping me in to help Bobbie in the art room clean-up.

• the judge for giving a sentence of 20 years to one of the president’s followers who sent pipe bombs to prominent Democrats.

• the Democrats in the House who pass immigration legislation.

• Angie at Bob Poynter for giving way beyond normal customer service, from Diane.

• those who urge senators to pass gun legislation on universal background checks that are awaiting a vote in the Senate.

Onions to …

• the city, for considering raising transit rates.

• the radio station broadcasting a commercial in Spanish (and not including English), which is a form of discrimination.

• people who whistle hoping to acquire drugs on Ross Street, therefore making me concerned about the school bus stop there.

• the employees behind the counter in the deli section talking and laughing with each other, but failing to acknowledge the customers waiting to be served.

• the Republican representatives who do nothing to improve gun control.

• the pathetically small amount of money it takes for politicians to neglect their constituents in favor of lobbyists.

• our new representative who had an essentially empty answer when asked about what to do about the mass shootings that are plaguing our country.

• those who say guns don’t kill when it’s the gun that kills, because without guns there would be fewer killings.

• local representatives for accepting thousands of dollars in NRA campaign contributions.

• people not realizing 29 people die every day from alcohol-impaired drivers yet there is no outrage about selling alcohol.

• those not remembering there seemed to be another president in 2008 that inflamed racial and ethnic prejudices and split this country in half.

• the city for excessive spending on law enforcement, which has led to having more police than the city needs or knows what to do with, so they follow follow school buses around.

• those who want guns banned when truth is if someone wants to take people’s lives by gunfire, then they’ll just obtain the guns illegally.

• the president for refusing to speak to the woman who represents El Paso, saying he’s “too busy,” yet is still planning to visit to city despite being asked not to.
