Council approves first reading of city salary ordinance for elected officials

Columbus City Council members voted Tuesday to approve a 2% salary increase for the mayor, clerk-treasurer and all seven council members in 2020.

City finance director Jamie Brinegar said the 2% increase is a cost of living adjustment. Currently, the Consumer Price Index, which measures changes in the price level consumer goods and services, is at 1.8%. The index is generally used as a guide for the cost of living adjustment.

The salary of the mayor will increase to $98,254. The clerk-treasurer’s salary will be set at $81,478, and each of the seven council members will earn $8,219.

The council will vote on the final reading of the salary ordinance at 6 p.m.  Sept. 3 at Columbus City Hall, 123 Washington St., in the council chambers.
