North wins tourney

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus North opened its season Friday and Saturday by capturing the Jeffersonville Invitational.

The Bull Dogs, led by victories from Nathan Lin at No. 1 singles and Adam Saad at No. 3 singles, finished with 31 points, one better than runner-up Zionsville.

Lin and Saad won all three of their matches at their respective positions. Bhavey Jain dropped a three-set match in the final to finish second at No. 2 singles.

Matthew Liu teamed with Joey Zhao for two matches and Noah Abfall for one to go 1-2 and finish fifth at No. 1 doubles. Eamon Ma and Will King lost a three-set match in Friday’s first round at No. 2 doubles, and Joseph Kloepfer and Luke Enneking split a pair on Saturday to give North a seventh-place finish at that position.

Jets fall to Bears

HOPE — Hauser opened its season Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Shelbyville.

Ethan Wallace beat Austin Dwenger 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the Jets’ lone point.

Hauser’s Caleb Hoover fell to Joel Justice 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Levi Gollmer lost to Aiden Asher 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Sam Miller and Eli Miller fell to Luke Asher and Layton Stieneker 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Carson Rose and Alex Pattingill lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings splits pair

ST. LEON — Jennings County bounced back from a 4-1 semifinal loss to East Central to beat Milan 3-2 in the third-place match of Saturday’s East Central Invitational.

Alex Leach and Owen Law won both of their matches at No. 1 doubles to lead the Panthers (1-3). Justin Ramey split his two matches at No. 2 singles, and Gage Gasper won his lone match at No. 3 singles.

Greyson Jackson dropped the other No. 3 singles matches. Wyatt St. John fell twice at No. 1 singles, and Joe Kelley and Jacob Vogel lost twice at No. 1 doubles.

Knights top Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County pulled out a win at No. 1 doubles, but that was all in a 4-1 Western Indiana Conference loss to Northview on Saturday.

Nolan Patterson and Aiden Burt beat Caleb Swearinggen and Franco Singulani 5-7, 7-5, (10-3) at No. 1 singles for the Eagles (2-1, 1-1)

Brown County’s Josh Miller fell to Brevin Cooper 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Reid Davis lost to Owen Tipton 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Austen Deckard fell to Tyler Hess 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Noah Cochran and Spencer Blee lost to Benjamin Goshen and Chase Nuckols 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

BOYS SOCCER

East ties for title

GREENWOOD — Class 3A No. 20 Columbus East upset 3A No. 6 Center Grove 2-0 before tying Brownsburg 2-2 in the championship game of Saturday’s Center Grove Trojan Classic.

Against Center Grove, Branson Young scored in the third minute off an assist from Chris Quisenberry, and Quisenberry scored in 62nd minute off a pass from Leyton Erfmeier. The Trojans outshot the Olympians 14-11, with East putting eight shots on goal to Center Grove’s six. Zach Roberts recorded six saves.

In the title game, the Olympians (2-0-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime. Jorge Nieto scored off an Eric Stiles assist in the 52nd minute, and Stiles scored in 72nd minute off an assist from Quisenberry before Brownsburg scored in 76th minute to tie it. The Bulldogs outshot East 15-14, with the Olympians putting 10 on goal to Brownsburg’s seven. Roberts posted five saves.

Spartans stop Jets

SHELBYVILLE — Hauser opened its season Saturday with a 5-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference loss at Southwestern (Shelby).

The Spartans outshot the Jets 12-6. Caleb Walker recorded seven saves.

Corydon edges Jennings

CORYDON — Corydon Central scored a goal in the first half and held on for a 1-0 win Saturday against Jennings County.

Braidon Foster posted six saves for the Panthers (1-1).

Cougars down Eagles

ROACHDALE — Brown County was within 2-1 with less then 10 minutes remaining Saturday, but North Putman added two more goals to pull away for a 4-1 WIC win.

Sam Normile scored the goal for the Eagles (0-2, 0-1), who were outshot 22-9. Ty Wesley recorded 18 saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bull Dogs blank Owls

SEYMOUR — Jenna Lang scored three goals, and Lauryn Whitley had three assists Saturday to lead 3A No. 16 Columbus North to its first win of the season, a 4-0 victory at Seymour.

Caroline Hollenkamp scored the other goal for the Bull Dogs (1-1), and Helena Ho had the other assist. North outshot the Owls 17-1, with Kaylyn Bates posting one save.

Hat trick leads East

INDIANAPOLIS — Alana Dwenger scored all three Columbus East goals to lead the Class 3A No. 20 Olympians to a 3-1 win Saturday at 2A No. 18 Roncalli.

Jaeda Berkemeier and Alexis Spurgeon had assists for East (1-0-1), which outshot the Rebels 11-4. Karisma Parker recorded two saves.

Panthers rout Lions

NORTH VERNON — Baylee Byford scored four goals Saturday to lead Jennings County to a 6-0 season-opening win against Salem.

Sonya Miller and Kenna Maschino each added a goal for the Panthers. Maschino and Tori Lee each posted one save.

Cougars shut out Eagles

ROACHDALE — North Putnam scored three times in the first half Saturday and went on to hand Brown County a season-opening 4-0 WIC loss.

The Cougars outshot the Eagles 16-4. Sarah Callahan recorded seven saves in the first half, and Hannah Hummel had five saves in the second half.

VOLLEYBALL

East wins in four

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus East overcame a third-set setback to recover for a 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11 Hoosier Hills Conference win Saturday at Jeffersonville.

Rilee Jessee pounded 10 kills, Gabby Dean had five blocks, Kenzie Foster tallied 17 digs and Reece Whitehead served seven aces to lead the Olympians (2-0, 1-0).

Also for East, Whitehead added eight kills, and Dean had seven kills. Madyson Foster notched 13 digs, while Saige Stahl added 10 digs and Cadence Gilley served two aces.

Jets claim invitational

HENRYVILLE — Class A No. 6 Hauser swept North Harrison 25-15, 25-10; Edinburgh 25-19, 25-13; Paoli 25-9, 25-12 and Henryville 25-22, 25-12 to win the Henryville Invitational. The Jets trailed 22-17 in the opening set of the final match against Henryville, but got a sideout, and Aunaka Wasil served seven consecutive points.

Hannah Johnson pounded 23 kills and 11 blocks, and Kylie Lock had 38 digs and 11 aces in the four matches to lead the Jets (6-0). Wasil finished with 75 assists.

Also for Hauser, Shelby Fugate recorded 19 kills and 29 digs. Lock also pounded 19 kills, Olivia Wright added 12 kills and four blocks, Marnie Schwartzkopf notched nine kills, Charlie Clark had five kills, Adriana Mussilami contributed five assists, Abby Branum added three assists, Andi Clark tallied 21 digs and six aces, Melanie Taylor had 21 digs and Mary Branum finished with 17 digs and nine aces.

Following its loss to Hauser, Edinburgh beat North Harrison 21-25, 26-24, 15-13; fell to Henryville 25-11, 25-11 and beat Paoli 25-17, 25-23.

Emily Chappelow recorded 16 kills and 15 assists and Paige Burton had 13 kills, 17 assists and 11 aces to lead the Lancers (3-3). Gracie Crawhorn tallied nine digs.

Mustangs nip Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County had a two-set lead, but Edgewood rallied for a 16-25, 20-25, 29-27, 25-15, 16-14 WIC win on Saturday.

Abigail Hollander led the Eagles (1-1, 0-1) with 24 assists and seven aces. Chloe Lee pounded 11 kills, Lauren Akles had three blocks and Natalie Suding tallied 17 digs.

Also for Brown County, Myka Snyder notched five kills and two blocks. Mary Rygiel pounded five kills, and Lee and Milly Patrick each added 13 digs.

Panthers go 3-1

KOKOMO — Jennings County bounced back from a 25-18, 25-13 loss to West Lafayette Harrison to beat Richmond 25-14, 25-17; Frankfort 10-25, 25-18, 15-12 and Maconaquah 26-24, 25-17 to finish 3-1 in Saturday’s Kokomo Invitational.

Abi Vogel pounded 28 kills and four solo and 13 assist blocks, and Liz Ertel had 28 assists and four aces to lead the Panthers (3-2). Carmen Kopitzke also recorded 28 assists, Hanah Bertram tallied 41 digs and Karma Warren served four aces.

Also for Jennings, Lucy Ernstes notched 13 kills, and Grace Ramey had two solo and 12 assist blocks. Warren added 20 digs.

CROSS-COUNTRY

North boys win event

CARMEL — Columbus North’s boys finished second overall, and Matt Newell won the Freshman-Sophomore race to lead the Bull Dogs to a victory in that event in Saturday’s Zionsville Early Bird 4K at Northview Church in Carmel.

North scored 50 points in the Freshman-Sophomore meet to 71 for Fishers and 86 for Center Grove. Newell ran 12 minutes, 50.0 seconds for 4,000 meters (2.5 miles), while Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff was fourth (13:11.1), Evan Carr seventh (13:21.1), Clayton Guthrie 16th (13:40.6) and Will Kiel 22nd (13:51.0).

The Bull Dogs finished fifth in the Junior-Senior boys race with 128 points. Fishers won with 53. Austin Pulkowski and Collin Pruitt took 16th and 17th in 13:13.6 and 13:15.0, while Andy Stohr was 23rd (13:24.9), Gabe Wills 35th (13:42.4) and Carson Littrell 37th (13:44.3).

Columbus East finished 14th in the Junior-Senior boys race with 427 points. Casey Bartholomew led the Olympians in 90th in 14:48.2, while Ryan Sadtler was 118th (15:13.2), Colby Hertle 169th (16:10.1), Mason Curry 179th (16:15.0) and Kaleb Walters 190th (16:29.3).

On the girls side, East finished ninth in the Junior-Senior race with 249 points. Zionsville won with 36. Ashley Novreske led the Olympians in 88th in 19:56.1, while Anna Combs was 97th (20:17.6), Michaela Greathouse 104th (20:46.8), Maddy Uphaus 108th (21:02.1) and Lynna Hendershot 112th (21:15.7).

East finished 11th in the Freshman-Sophomore girls race with 254 points. Carmel won with 75. Laurel Knight led the Olympians in 43rd in 17:06.9, while Chloe Krueger was 48th (17:20.0), Olivia Shoaf 71st (17:59.9), Jordan Spurgeon 78th (18:12.4) and Mallory Rupp 91st (18:32.1).

Hauser runners compete

TRAFALGAR — Hauser had four boys and two girls compete Saturday in the Indian Creek Invitational.

Ryan Ault led the Jet boys with a fifth-place finish in 18:00.27 for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Noah Estes took 23rd in 20:13.57, while Alex Bower was 37th (21:47.41) and Aiden Cheshire 51st (29:22.44).

Addison Jones finished 25th in the girls race in 28:05.87. Kaitlynn Everroad was 31st in 29:20.53.

Lancers, Cougars run

SHELBYVILLE — Edinburgh had two boys and three girls, and Trinity Lutheran had two boys and four girls compete in Saturday’s Southwestern (Shelby) Small School Invitational at Blue River Park.

Trinity’s Mya Nay finished 73rd in the girls race in 26:16.84, while Sadie Nay was 91st (27:37.60), Abby Hildreth 121st (30:57.06) and Bry Bailey 137th (34:50.78). Edinburgh’s Alyssa Funkhouser took 120th (30:48.12), while Ciera Myers was 122nd (31:07.86) and Cloee Britton 133rd (34:03.04).

For the boys, Trinity’s Jordan Peters finished 157th in 23:08.29, and Evan Hunt was 190th (26:04.62). Edinburgh’s Parker young took 173rd (24:02.12) and Landen Burton was 186th (25:14.27).

GIRLS GOLF

Bull Dogs take fifth

INDIANAPOLIS — Nathaly Munnicha won medalist honors on a scorecard playoff after firing a 72 to lead No. 6 Columbus North to a fifth-place finish in Saturday’s Roncalli Invitational.

No. 3 Westfield won the event with a 317 at Smock. No. 4 Carmel and No. 5 Zionsville both shot 317, with the Greyhounds taking second on the fifth-score tiebreaker; while No. 14 Center Grove and the Bull Dogs both finished at 328, with the Trojans taking the tiebreaker.

Annie Anderson carded an 80 for North. Ella Wilks added an 87, Gwen Anderson shot 89 and Yestika Nischol had a 91.

East finishes third

CORYDON —Columbus East finished third with a 370 in the Floyd Central Invitational at Old Capitol. Floyd Central won, and Bedford North Lawrence took second.

Lauren Steinwedel led the Olympians with a 90. Peyton Meier added a 92, Harley Gant and Cristen Martinez each shot 94 and Katie Hong had a 105.

Eagles are runner-up

JASPER — Brown County finished second with a 439 in Saturday’s Jasper Invitational. Jasper won with a 387 at Buffalo Trace.

Taylor Poling led the Eagles with a 99. Allison Stogsdill carded a 101, Ainslie Wintin added a 114, Abby Padgett shot 125 and Annika Evenson had a 129.

Eagles open with win

NASHVILLE — Brown County built a big halftime lead, then rested its starters in the second half of a 41-19 season-opening win over Pike Central on Friday.

Noah Carter was 16-of-19 passing for 217 yards and three touchdowns. His scoring strikes went for 1 yard to Brandon Fleischman, 33 yards to Javan Oliphant and 17 yards to Jordan Oswald.

Cody Walsh scored on a 28-yard run, and Waunblee Roux ran 5 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles’ other score came on a 35-yard interception return from Seth Oliphant.

Oswald caught six passes for 68 yards, and Walsh had four catches for 63 yards. Carter Kelly led the defense with eight tackles, while Caleb Popp added seven and Hunter Funkhouser had six.

"The defensive effort was really spread out, which I was pleased with," Brown County coach Randy Minniear said. "It was a good game for us. Our kids played well, and that made me very happy."

Panthers drop opener

NORTH VERNON — Lance Bailey completed 22 of 34 passes for 236 yards and ran for 60 yards Friday, but it wasn’t enough in Jennings County’s 45-28 loss to Batesville in coach Justun Sharp’s head coaching debut.

Bailey’s 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter brought the Panthers within 13-7. But the Bulldogs extended the lead to 26-7 at halftime and led 38-7 midway though the third quarter.

Jennings got three short touchdown runs from Owen Deaton in the second half.

"We didn’t quit," Sharp said. "We kept grinding. Our offense played pretty well. Our offense played good enough to win, but our defense didn’t."

Jared Corya caught 12 passes for 121 yards for the Panthers.

Tigers topple Lancers

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh’s Tyler DeSpain also made his head coaching debut Friday in the Lancers’ 7-0 loss to Indianapolis Tindley.

The Tigers scored the game’s lone touchdown on a 55-yard run on the second play of the third quarter. Edinburgh had chances, but couldn’t convert.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot a couple times,” DeSpain said. “We had some open routes that kids should have caught. We had some good times and some bad times, and we had a good time running the ‘I,’ but we just shot ourselves in the foot.”

Chargers tame Cougars

GREENSBURG — North Decatur jumped out to a 39-0 lead after three quarters Friday and went on to hand South Decatur a 39-7 loss in former Jennings County coach Rick Zimmerman’s debut with the Cougars.

South Decatur’s lone touchdown came on an 18-yard run by Wyatt Gatewood with 7:10 left in the game.
