Services and studies

Dayspring Church Apostolic — Worship begins at 11:15 a.m. at the church, 2127 Doctors Park Drive, Columbus.

Every visitor will receive a free gift.

Bible study will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and builds on the message from the previous Sunday with handout questions.

Prayer of Power starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and is preceded with requests and instructions on prayer. The Celebrate Recovery session starts at 6:30 p.m. for about an hour.

Ignite is the Youth Growth Session that happens every third Friday.

East Columbus United Methodist — Pastor Ann Thomas will deliver the message from the Book of Luke at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at the church, 2439 Indiana Ave. Communion will be served. Morning fellowship time begins at 9 a.m. in the foyer with beverages and light snacks.

Children can receive their own message at Children’s Church. A staffed nursery/toddler room is available during the morning service.

Sunday school will begin at 10:40 a.m. for all ages and Bible interests.

Pastor Thomas will deliver the message at the 6 p.m. evening chapel service.

Tuesday afternoon Bible study begins at 1 p.m. in the chapel. The study is covering the book of Philippians.

Wednesday evening Bible study begins at 7 p.m. in the chapel and is currently studying 1 Corinthians.

All are welcome to join any of the Bible study classes.

Fairlawn Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. led by the Rev. Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, followed by fellowship time.

Child care is available during Sunday services and second hour studies.

A men’s breakfast is 7:30 a.m. the second Saturday of every month for men of all ages.

The Last Friday’s Bluegrass event is 7:30 p.m. the last Friday of every month. All are welcome to bring an instrument and play along or simply enjoy the music.

First Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m., at 512 Seventh St., Columbus. On Sunday, the sermon will be “Sharing God’s story. Scriptures include Acts 2:1-18 and Matthew 28:17-20. Communion will be offered and the choir will lead worship.

Infant and toddler care is available 9:15 a.m. to noon.

The men’s and women’s support groups meet on Fridays at 7 a.m., and a second men’s support group (working age men) meets every Monday at 6:15 a.m. People in the community in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals offered at 5 p.m. Fridays (please enter through the glass doors on Franklin).

First Presbyterian is an LGBTQ-friendly church that is open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist — On Sunday, at the 9 a.m. traditional service and the 11 a.m. celebration service, the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “The Values by which We Live: Compassion,” at the church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus.

The scripture will be Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16. Sunday School begins at 10:10 a.m. Child care is available during both services. There will be no Sunday school.

Flintwood Wesleyan — On Sunday, the Amplify (non-traditional) service begins at at 9 a.m. with Sunday School classes at 10 a.m. in the regular rooms. The Well (traditional) service starts at 11 a.m. Both services are in the the main sanctuary and led by the Rev. Wes Jones, senior pastor. Pastor Jones is doing a new series titled “The Days of Elijah.” The title for Sunday is “The Chariot Ride.”

The Prayer Team meets at 8 a.m.

Sunday evenings Celebrate Recovery begins with a meal at 5:25 p.m. in The Friendship Center and the meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the main sanctuary. The public is invited to attend.

Wednesday activities begins with a meal at 5:30 p.m. The program, iKids (Ignite Kids) On Fire For Jesus! starts at 6:15 p.m. This program is for kids in Pre-K through the sixth grade. If your child needs transportation, call the church office. The bus will run on Wednesday nights. The prayer team meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Prayer Room. Youth meets at 6:30 p.m. downstairs in the church. Bible study is at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Thursdays: Cub Scout Pack 588 will meet when events are scheduled and Boy Scout Troop 588 will meet at 7 p.m.

Grace Lutheran — Rev. John Armstrong will bring the message based on Luke 14:1-14. Worship is at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Adult Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m.

“Alpha, an introduction to Christianity” continues at 6 p.m. Tuesday with the topic, “Who is Jesus?” Men’s Bible study is at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Searching Scripture class begins Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the topic, “The Ten Commandments.”

During the summer the church will be going through the book of Acts and looking at the beginning of the Church and the boldness of the apostles and followers of Jesus.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Sunday service is at 10 a.m. Sunday school is at 9 a.m., followed by fellowship at 9:40 a.m.

Petersville United Methodist — The Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will present her sermon, “Healing Power: Connection,” at the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday morning; scriptures from Luke 24:5 and Colossians 3:12 will be shared. The theme for the morning will be “Choose Life.” Teresa Covert will give the children’s sermon. A time of fellowship will follow the service.

Both Bible Study classes will resume at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the home of the Larry Nolting and at the home of Chris Kimerling. New members are always welcome. The Sit and Stitch group will begin meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the home of Connie Nolting and new members may join at any time.

Choir practice, under the direction of Kathy Bush, will begin again at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Prayer Time, led by Barb Hedrick, meets at 10 a.m. at the church each Thursday morning. The United Methodist men’s meeting will be at 7:15 a.m. on Sept. 8 in the church fellowship hall.

On Sept. 8, the church will have an outdoor worship service at 10 a.m. (note the time change) on the front lawn; a pitch-in lunch will follow. Those attending should bring a dish to share and their lawn chairs. Drinks and paper products will be furnished.

St. Paul Lutheran — Pastor Doug Bauman will deliver the message “Our Christian Labor” based on Hebrews 13:1-17 at the 8 and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6045 E. State St., Columbus.

Christian education classes for all ages begin at 9:30 a.m. Vicar Daniel Fickenscher will lead worship at the 2:30 p.m. Spanish service with Spanish/English Sunday School following at 3:30 p.m.

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus — The message at the 10 a.m. service Sunday will be “No Identity is an Island” by the Rev. Nic Cable. Cable will discuss how power and privilege — or a lack of it — shape identities and lives.

Westside Community — Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church at the corner of 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard. The children’s program for birth through sixth grade meets at the same time as the 10 a.m. worship service.

Wilson Chapel Christian Union — Sunday worship service begins at 9:30 a.m. The pastor is Jon Merrifield.

Sunday School classes meet at 10:30 a.m.

Praise Team practice is at 6 p.m. on Monday night.

Faith In Action, a community outreach program, meets at the Family Life Center at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evenings for a time of prayer before going into the local community to share God’s love.

Wilson Chapel Christian Union church is located on State Road 7, one mile south of the Bartholomew-Jennings county line.

Lowell General Baptist — The church will host a hymn sing at 7 p.m. Sept. 7. Jerry Caudill and Boys will be the featured singers.

Events

Community Church of Columbus — DivorceCare, DivorceCare for Teens and DivorceCare for Kids will be offered for 12 weeks beginning Sept. 24. The sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. The divorce ministry is part of the Tuesday Connection series.

East Columbus Christian — The church presents Fuel on Wednesday nights, which includes a free meal and Bible study from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It is located at 3170 Indiana Ave., next to Columbus East High School.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — The church’s annual “free” neighborhood block party will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14, rain or shine. The event will include free food, giveaways, games and prizes, a bounce house for kids and many local service providers will be present with information on programs available in our community. This is a free event and open to the community!

First Lutheran — The church will host an Alzheimer’s Support Group meeting on the third Monday of each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The group will be led by Mary Ellen Wyman, the former executive director of the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, and will be open to the public.

It is a peer-led group of caregivers who are providing support for those living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. This is not a group for individuals or patients diagnosed with dementia.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The next open market will be 8:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 7. Local artisans will be set up as well as vendors selling food and produce. If you are interested in renting a booth contact Kim Rutan in the church office.

The District SAM Retreat at The Family Campgrounds in Orleans is scheduled for Sept. 4-7. The event is aimed at seniors and will include games, auctions, Bible lessons, food and fellowship.

The monthly SAM luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at The Friendship Center.

On Sept. 21, the youth will have a Kiss the Critter Event. Details will be announced soon.

Petersville United Methodist — On Sept. 15, the United Methodist Men will host their annual hot dog roast and ice cream social at 5:30 p.m. They will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and ice cream. Those attending are invited to bring a salad or dessert and they should bring their lawn chairs and gather on the east side of the church property.

St. Paul Lutheran — A euchre party will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the fellowship room at the church, 6045 E. State St., Columbus. The cost is $5 per person. Proceeds benefit Vicar Fickenscher’s ministry. All are invited.

The church’s early childhood ministry will host the 13th annual golf scramble Sept. 21 at Shadowood Golf Course, 333. N. Sandy Creek Drive, Seymour.

Sign-in will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $240 per foursome or $60 per individual and includes continental breakfast, practice balls, green fees with cart, lunch and prizes.

{strong}South Central Indiana Christian Men’s Fellowship — 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at United Christian Church, 7810 W. State Road 250, Paris Crossing. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. and is followed by the meeting at 7:15 p.m. The meal is fried chicken and trimmings, including cheesy potatoes. Johnny Johnson will be the speaker. Women are invited to attend this meeting, too.
