Marketplace: Bankers Association leader posthumously honored

Robert C. Nelson, former leader of the Indiana Bankers Association, was recognized posthumously on Aug. 9 by the Indiana Bankers Association as a Leader in Banking Excellence, the association’s highest honor.

Nelson, who resided in Columbus, was represented at the awards ceremony by family members. The award celebrates exceptional leaders who have positively impacted Indiana banks and the communities they serve.

The awards ceremony took place at the IBA offices in Indianapolis.

Nelson died in 2018. He had served the association for 33 years before retiring as president. Previously, he was with LaPorte Bank and Trust Co., the U.S. Army Air Corps finance department and Associates Investment Company of South Bend.

Affiliations included the American Bankers Association, Indiana Council for Economic Education and the Economic Club of Indiana. Additionally, he volunteered with Kiwanis International and served on the board of SCORE.

Nelson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a Sagamore of the Wabash and Kentucky Colonel, a member of the IBA 40 Year Club, and an alumnus of Oxford University in England and Indiana University.
