Hope plans annual cleanup day

HOPE — Three large dumpster containers, as well as the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District (SWMD) recycling trailer, will be utilized when the town of Hope has its annual Community Clean Up Day.

Cardboard, glass and plastic will be accepted between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m on Friday outside the Hope Utilities Garage, 529 Mill St.

Organizers are only accepting these particular items because there is an established market for them, SWMD director Heather Siesel said.

Items that will no longer be accepted include tires, televisions, refrigerators, window air conditioners, computers or computer monitors, organizers said.

These are all items with contents that can potentially cause environmental damage, so their proper disposal is expensive, Siesel said.

Hope residents who have acceptable recyclable items, but don’t have any way to bring them to the garage, may call or text 812-343-3798, or simply call 812-546-4499, to make arrangements to have those items picked up.

A sweep of Hope will be made to separately pick up brush and limbs at the curb. Any brush and limbs should be set at the curb the day before regular garbage pickup.

This annual clean-up event is traditionally held just prior to the Hope Heritage Days festival, which will be Sept. 27-29 in the Hope Town Square.
