Columbus police arrested two people Sunday night after determining an 11-month-old child was left alone in poor living conditions inside a Columbus residence.
Police were sent to a residence at 11:15 p.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of Elm Street for a welfare check, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
Several minutes later, the officers spoke to Bradley A. Longworth, 38, of 1721 Elm St., who walked up to the residence. He advised officers that he resided at the home and the infant child was picked up by a friend and was not inside the house, Harris said.

The officers made contact with the infant’s mother, Sarah E. Coe, 28, also of 1721 Elm St., who arrived at the residence a short time later. Coe confirmed that the child was inside the house, Harris said.
When officers entered the home, they noted what they described as “deplorable” living conditions inside including the overwhelming odor of animal urine and feces, Harris said.
Coe and Longworth were placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where each was on a 48-hour-hold on a preliminary charge of Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent, Harris said.
The Indiana Department of Child Services was contacted and assisted with the call, Harris said.
Coe and Longworth each had bonds set at $7,500 and were continuing to be held at the jail, according to jail officials.
