Accident on I-65 near Columbus claims 1 life

10:30 p.m. update:

The Columbus Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving two vehicles that occurred on Interstate 65 today.

At about 4:45 p.m., CPD officers were dispatched to the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 at the 67 mile marker in regard to a crash involving a vehicle on fire.

Witnesses reported that the driver of a 2008 Pontiac G6 was backing up, traveling south in the left northbound lane of Interstate 65 toward a crossover, when the Pontiac was struck by a 2019 Honda Pilot, which was traveling north in the left lane of the interstate, causing the Pontiac to become engulfed in fire, said Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the Columbus Police Department.

The driver of the Honda Pilot, Vanessa Rosborough, 31, of Indianapolis was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Rosborough’s passenger, Emily McNiff, 28, of Fishers, Indiana was transported by LifeLine medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. No further updates on her condition were immediately available, Harris said.

The driver of the Pontiac G6 was pronounced deceased at the scene. Positive identification of the driver is still pending. The crash remains under investigation by CPD accident reconstructionists, Harris said.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 65 were closed from the 64-68 mile markers for about 3 1/2 hours. All lanes of the Interstate are now open.

First responders have shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 at the 67 mile marker due to a three-vehicle accident. The accident was reported at 4:45 p.m.

Columbus police are reporting one car is fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters are reporting one fatality at the scene.

First responders have requested a medical helicopter to transport patients from the scene.

Several Columbus fire department engines have been sent to the scene.

Northbound traffic is being diverted off the interstate at the 64 mile marker.
