Republic receives 12 awards at HSPA contest

The Republic received 12 awards Saturday at the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation Better Newspaper Contest at The Nest Event Center in Greenwood.

This year, the newspaper competed in the highest circulation category for newspapers, competing among papers with more than 10,000 circulation up to more than 100,000 in circulation.

The Republic placed second in the general excellence award category, which is based on the total number of awards a newspaper receives in its division.

Awards received by the newspaper included:

First place

Best website, Republic staff

Best editorial page, Republic staff.

Best sports event coverage, Republic staff, for coverage of the Mill Race Marathon.

Best sports photo, Mike Wolanin, for a photo of the winner of the Mill Race Marathon celebrating at the finish line. This photo was a finalist for Photo of the Year.

Second place

General excellence, Republic staff.

Best sports section, Ted Schultz and James Pence.

Best feature section, Republic staff, for the weekly Faith section.

Best special section, Republic staff, for the Colors for a Cure section.

Third place

Best deadline news reporting, Julie McClure, for a story about Columbus native John Brown, once an aide to President George H.W. Bush, reflecting on the former president’s death and legacy.

Best business economic coverage, Julie McClure and Kirk Johannesen, for coverage of Cummins’ celebration of its 100th anniversary this year.

Best spot news photo, Mike Wolanin, for a photo of the chaotic scene following a serious accident involving Hauser High School students.

Best general news photo, Mike Wolanin, for a photo of a sensory playscape installation planned for Exhibit Columbus.
