MALE

Nathan Lin, Columbus North sophomore tennis player

Lin won both of his No. 1 singles matches last week, prevailing in straight sets in a 4-1 victory against Bloomington South and in three sets in a 3-2 triumph at Floyd Central.

His performance last week: “For the Bloomington South opponent, I knew him personally, so I knew what to do. For the Floyd Central match, in the third set I figured out how to play similar to how I played in the first set.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “Usually, I just stretch on the tennis court for 5 or 10 minutes and then run a few laps (around the court).”

Favorite drink: “Gatorade”

Favorite food: “Sushi”

Favorite class: “Math”

Favorite sports team: “Los Angeles Lakers”

Favorite athlete: “Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal”

Role model: “I look up to my brother (Kevin) and my dad (Roger).”

Best advice: “To keep fighting and never give up. Have a strong mental (outlook) through everything you’re doing.”

Athletics goal: “I hope to play tennis in college..”

If you could travel anywhere: “I’d probably travel to Paris because of all the sightseeing and food.”

FEMALE

Lauryn Whitley, Columbus North junior soccer player

Whitley scored a goal in a 7-0 win against Bloomington North, netted two goals in a 5-0 victory at Franklin and had three assists in Saturday’s 9-0 win at Terre Haute North.

Her performance last week: “We finished a lot of our opportunities, which always makes you really happy. I’ve had some pretty good passes I think that people have been finishing off, and we’ve gotten a big variety of our players to score, which is one of my favorite things because then everyone is happy.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I just listen to music, and I always eat hot Cheetos before the game.”

Favorite drink: “Sweet tea”

Favorite food: “Strawberries”

Favorite class: “AP Literature”

Favorite sports team: “Notre Dame”

Favorite athlete: “My dad (former North and Notre Dame star Dane Whitley). He’s a really big inspiration to me because he has a lot of accomplishments with soccer and has pushed me all my life.”

Role model: “Both of my parents (Dane and Sarah Whitley) because they always work really hard, and they’re really selfless.”

Best advice: “Always stay clicked in and never give up.”

Athletics goal: “To get the (school single-season) assist record, and I’m thinking about playing in college.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I think I would go to somewhere in Italy because I see a lot of pictures of all these white buildings on the islands, and it’s so pretty.”
