Fleeing driver arrested after high risk traffic stop

Chester Rooks

Columbus police arrested a local driver who fled during an attempted traffic stop near 32nd Street and Marr Road.

Police attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Chester L. Rooks, 56, Columbus, at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Rooks initially refused to stop, but was pulled over near 25th Street and Marr Road, Harris said. When the officer got out of his patrol car and approached Rook’s vehicle, Rooks sped off down Marr Road, Harris said.

Officers caught up to Rooks a short time later and performed a high risk traffic stop in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2400 block of Marr Road.

After Rooks was taken into custody, officers noted a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath, Harris said.

Rooks failed multiple field sobriety tests and the officers applied for and received a warrant for a blood draw at Columbus Regional Hospital, Harris said.

Rooks was arrested on preliminary charges of driving a vehicle while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, Harris said.
