A growing experience

Not all learning is with pencils and paper, laptops or books. Sometimes the best learning is hands-on.

Such is the case at Hauser Jr./Sr. High School where eighth-graders in Sharon Mapes’ resources class learn how to grow fruits, vegetables and plants in garden boxes located in the school courtyard. The experience has helped them gain an appreciation for gardening, healthy foods and healthy eating habits.

We applaud using the garden as an outdoor lab for the students, because it provides a different and broader experience.

Nice win

Encouraging girls to get involved in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields has been a focus and challenge locally. However, the success of GalacTech Team 4926 can be used to show what’s possible and how rewarding it can be.

The Columbus-based robotics team was part of the winning alliance in a robotics competition for girls Sept. 28 in Indianapolis, which featured 22 teams from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Tennessee. GalacTech Team 4926 formed an alliance with teams from Westfield and Whitewater, Wisconsin to win quarterfinal and semifinal competitions, and then the overall title.

Kudos to the girls for their victory and setting a good example for others to consider the STEM fields.

Change is good

The seventh annual Mill Race Marathon, conducted Sept. 28 in Columbus, featured a new look this year, as the courses for the 5K, half-marathon and marathon events no longer passed through Mill Race Park. Railroad companies that guaranteed trains wouldn’t pass through during the race could no longer make that promise.

That meant race director Joel Sauer and Randy Stafford, who’s in charge of course planning for the organizing committee, had to make changes in the routes. In addition to moving the start-finish line a half-block north, a loop through downtown Columbus was added, a portion of the People Trail was added to the course and the 5K race was run in the opposite direction.

In the end, the changes worked well and without problems. Well done.
