Recycling center to offer ‘Amnesty Day’

Bartholomew County’s Solid Waste Management District will have a variety of options available to help local residents recycle hard-to-dispose-of items.

“Amnesty Day” will be Nov. 9 at the Columbus/Bartholomew Recycling Center, 720 S. Mapleton St.

Between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, local residents may bring the following hard-to-dispose items to the center to recycle them at no cost.

Up to four tires (pick-up size or smaller, rims removed)

Up to two air conditioners or refrigerant-containing appliances containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFC).

Up to two propane gas tanks.

Those who bring in the maximum amount of these hard-to-dispose items will save up to $50 in disposal fees, district education coordinator Jessica Norcross said.

Older televisions and computer monitors will also be accepted, but Norcross says the same $20 disposal fee normally assessed for their disposal will be charged.

The older electronics contain heavy metals, semi-metals and other chemical compounds that are considered dangerous to animal life, she said. It costs the district more than $20 per unit to properly dispose of older electronic items, so the fee is actually just a subsidy to the actual cost, Norcross said.

“Amnesty Day” is just one of three activities associated with America Recycles Day in Bartholomew County. Also on Nov. 9, the “Deja Vu Art and Fine Craft Show” will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Commons in downtown Columbus.

Sponsored by the Lincoln-Central Neighborhood Family Center, the art show features glass art, jewelry, mosaics, sculptures, wearable art, weaving and wood carvings — all made out of recycled items.

Officially, America Recycles Day falls this year on Friday, Nov. 15, which also has a district event.

On that Friday, the district will sponsor “Get Caught Recycling.” That’s when district employees at the recycling center and the Bartholomew County Landfill, 811 E. County Road 450S, will look for local residents recycling. Between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., staff members will select 25 individual to receive prizes as a reward for recycling, Norcross said.

In late April, the SWMD offers a similar disposal opportunity held in conjunction with Earth Day. Norcross says when you average out attendance over the last 10 years, the spring and fall programs bring in nearly equal amounts of participants and recyclable products.

“The only notable difference is that we tend to get more tires in the spring than in the fall,” Norcross said.
