Hanover honors East grads

With the exception of volleyball, it was rather a quiet week of college sports from athletes around the area last week.

For the ones that did perform, here’s a look of how the collegiate athletes from the Republic area fared over the past week.

FOOTBALL

Murphy, Horner cited

Hanover College’s Nash Murphy was named Scout Defensive Player of the Week, and Cody Horner was named Special Teams Player of the Game for the Panthers’ Oct. 5 win against Anderson.

Murphy and Horner are freshmen from Columbus East. Horner had two returns for 94 yards in a 70-0 victory.

Hanover is 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference following Saturday’s 42-0 win at Defiance. The Panthers are off this week before hosting Manchester at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 26.

Crider helps Hoosiers

Indiana University starting left guard Harry Crider, a junior from East, helped the running attack gain 260 total net yards on the ground in a 35-0 rout of Rutgers on Saturday.

The Hoosiers are 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten and travel to Maryland at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

SOCCER

Smith nets two

Thomas More forward Ethan Smith, a senior from Columbus North, scored two goals in a 5-2 loss to Life University (Ga.) on Wednesday.

The Saints are 4-7.

VOLLEYBALL

VanLiew still winning

Florida Gulf Coast outside hitter Cortney VanLiew finished with seven kills and four digs in a 25-14, 25-22, 15-17 victory over Jacksonville.

VanLiew, a junior from East, recorded 11 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and two assists in 25-21, 25-13, 21-25, 25-9 win over Kennesaw State. The 11 kills and 10 digs was the seventh double-double recorded by her this season.

The Eagles are 16-3 and 6-1 in the ASUN.

Western big in losses

Northern Kentucky middle blocker Bailey Western finished with nine kills, three digs, two blocks and an assist in a 22-25, 28-26, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13 loss to Oakland on Wednesday.

Western, a junior from East, recorded five blocks, two kills, two digs and an ace in 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20 loss to Milwaukee on Friday.

The Norse are 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the Horizon League.

Schoen sees action

Eastern Kentucky defensive specialist Sydney Schoen recorded five digs in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-15 loss to Morehead State on Wednesday.

Schoen, a sophomore from Hauser, finished with three digs in a 24-26, 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, 21-19 victory over Murray State on Saturday.

The Colonels are 7-13 overall and 2-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Metz contributes

Huntington University outside hitter Brea Metz had five kills in a 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22 victory over Bethel on Wednesday.

Metz, a junior from Hauser, finished with three kills in a win against William Penn University on Friday and in losses to Lewis-Clark State College on Friday and John Brown University on Saturday. She added eight kills in a loss to Oklahoma City University on Saturday.

Williams still solid

IU-Kokomo setter Kendal Williams tallied 15 assists, nine digs and an ace in a 25-14, 25-14, 25-15 win over Cincinnati Christian on Tuesday.

Williams, a sophomore from East, added 31 assists and four digs in a 3-1 loss to Springs Valley on Friday. She finished with 15 assists, four digs and an ace in a 3-0 loss to Trinity International on Friday. She had 15 assists and seven digs in a 3-0 loss to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.

The Cougars are 16-8 overall and 6-0 in the River States Conference.
