The Jennings County Historical Society hosted its annual Ghost Walk and Mystery Dinner on Oct. 11 and 12 in Vernon.
This event is one of the historical society’s major fundraising events.
The Ghost Walk consists of several short live performances based on local ghost stories. This year’s Ghost Walk consisted of 10 individual performances scattered throughout the Vernon. Costumed guides led groups to each of the skits, providing warnings for any particularly scary acts. The stories that were performed originated from several locations within Indiana, including several stories based within the town of Vernon.
The Jennings County Company, a performing group consisting primarily of students from the local middle and high schools, conducts the Ghost Walk each year. High school juniors and seniors get the chance to gain experience by directing the performances. Each of the 10 stories were directed by high school students who have been inducted into the International Thespian Society.

Caleb Dougherty, a Jennings County High School senior and a first-time Ghost Walk director, said he valued the experience.
“It was quite fun,” Dougherty said. “I had expected it to be more stressful for me, but it wasn’t. It may have been luck or the fact that I had a small group, but either way it went a lot smoother than I thought it would.”
Next year’s Ghost Walk is scheduled for Oct. 9 and 10.
Cyrus Brewer is a senior at Jennings County High School.
