Turning Point Domestic Violence supporter Hutch Schumaker raised $15,791 of a $26,000 goal late Thursday from a six-hour sit-in on the roof of the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. where he serves as president.

The community leader’s wife, Kevina Schumaker, is a Turning Point board member.

“It’s an ever-increasing number,” said Elisabeth Jones, Turning Point’s vice president of resource development.

The money will help fund purchase of a van needed for Turning Point Domestic Violence Service’s new prevention programming. Turning Point works toward the prevention and elimination of domestic and dating violence.

The fundraiser was part of the non-profit agency’s 100 Men + Friends tailgate gathering, complete with burgers and hot dogs from the local Amazing Joe’s restaurant and its managing partner Nick Grams.

Before that gathering, Turning Point’s annual Men Take A Stand program unfolded downtown. In special awards ceremony, Jim Roberts, superintendent of the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. was honored with the organization’s Stand Up 2019 Award.

When Schumaker came down from the roof, he pleaded for more people to catch Turning Point’s vision.

“Pleeeease, within the next very few days, step up and help get this van paid for,” Schumaker said in the chill.

Stephen Dishinger, Turning Point’s community prevention manager, also addressed supporters.

“On behalf of Turning Point and the Prevention Team and everybody who participated, thanks for helping us get this far,” Dishinger said.
