Indiana University freshmen Cayden Rooks and Nick South made their season debuts in the Michigan State Open on Saturday.
Rooks, a freshman from Columbus East, finished fourth in the Freshman/Sophomore Division at 133 (pounds). South, also a freshman from East, finished second in the Freshman/Sophomore Division at 165.
FOOTBALL
Crider rolls to victory
Indiana University starting left guard Harry Crider, a junior from East, helped the Hoosiers net 144 rushing yards and 414 total yards on offense in a 34-3 home victory against Northwestern on Saturday.
The Hoosiers have their first winning season since 2007 as they move to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten Conference.
VOLLEYBALL
VanLiew still winning
Florida Gulf Coast University outside hitter Cortney VanLiew finished with 15 kills, five digs, two blocks, an assist and an ace in a 25-15, 25-14, 25-9 victory over Stetson on Friday.
VanLiew, a junior from East, added seven kills, five digs, five blocks and an ace in a 25-16, 25-16, 27-25 win against North Florida on Saturday.
The Eagles have won 14 straight matches and are 24-3 on the season and 12-1 in the ASUN.
BASKETBALL
Gross has double-double
Olivet Nazarene University men’s center Alex Gross, a sophomore from Hauser, finished with 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 100-67 win over William Woods University on Saturday.
The Tigers are 3-0 on the season.
Williams starts in win
Marian University women’s forward Elle Williams, a senior from Columbus North, scored seven points and three rebounds in a 74-51 win over Saint Ambrose University on Saturday.
The Knights are off to a 2-0 start on the season.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Tong crosses second
Hanover women’s runner Arig Tong crossed the finish line in second place in 23 minutes, 13 seconds in the 6K race in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Meet at LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute on Sunday
Tong, a sophomore from North, helped the Panthers to a runner-up finish.
Sluys places 23rd
Rose-Hulman men’s runner John Sluys finished 23rd in the HCAC championship with a time of 28:27 in the 8K race.
Sluys, a freshman from North, helped the Engineers to a runner-up finish.
Lax finishes 13th
Belmont women’s runner Sierra Lax crossed the finish line in 13 with a time of 18:29 at the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championships.
Lax, a senior from North, helped the Bruins to a third place finish.
SWIMMING
Coles finishes second
Marshall University women’s swimmer Darby Coles finished second in the 100 freestyle in 53.22 seconds at the West Virginia Games on Saturday.
Coles, a junior from North, placed second in 4X100 medley relay in 3:55.46 and second in the 4X50 freestyle relay in 1:45.98.
