Local man arrested for OWI after traffic infraction

A local man was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after officers observed his vehicle disregard a traffic signal on Tuesday night.

Shortly before midnight, a CPD officer observed a black passenger car traveling east on 25th Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When the vehicle approached the intersection at 25th Street and Central Avenue, the driver, who was later identified as William E. Lane, 46, of Columbus, reportedly disregarded the red traffic signal and continued east on 25th Street, Harris said.

When officers stopped Lane’s vehicle a short time later, they noted that he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and his eyes appeared bloodshot and glassy.

After failing several field sobriety tests, Lane was transported to the Columbus Police Department for a certified chemical test. Lane later provided a breath sample of .143% and was placed under arrest, Harris said.

Officers noted that Lane had a previous operating a vehicle while intoxicated conviction in Bartholomew County in August.

Lane was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was being held on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a previous conviction, a Level 6 felony.
