Police investigating catalytic converter thefts

Columbus police are seeking tips about recent suspicious activity involving catalytic converter thefts from vehicles in the city.

Since Oct. 1st, CPD has received 23 reports of catalytic converter thefts, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The thefts have occurred primarily on larger vehicles including box trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles.

A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device on a vehicle that reduces toxic gasses and pollutants in exhaust gas.

Suspects will often crawl under a vehicle and cut the catalytic converter off of the vehicle with a cordless saw and then sell the converter to a scrap yard or third party, Harris said.

The thefts have occurred during both the day and night in several different areas across the city, Harris said.

Anyone who observes suspicious activity or has information in regards to these thefts is urged to contact the Columbus Police Department at 812-376-2600. Tips and information can be left anonymously.
