Around Town – November 13

Orchids to …

• Dairy Queen on Third Street for honoring veterans with a free Blizzard.

• rational and responsible citizens who understand that a theory is part of the scientific process of gathering facts and testing to support finding a solution to a problem.

• the Women of Vision at the Edinburgh Separate Baptist Church for their thoughtful gift to veterans, from a thankful veteran.

• all members of the city council who will work together in a bipartisan manner for Columbus and not just for a party.

• Rodney and Brea at Columbus Collision on a job well done from Bill and Marty Fleetwood.

• Alex at Target for helping me set up my new phone.

• St. Bartholomew School for the wonderful Veterans Day program.

• Ali Patberg, for the great basketball game she played on Sunday, from a friend.

• all the people who helped, encouraged, and attended the 12 Dames of Christmas Craft Show on Saturday.

• all the teachers, students, parents and other caring citizens for planning to go to the rally on Nov. 19 at the statehouse to support public schools.

• the elementary students at Hope Elementary for lining the hallway and greeting all the veterans who came to the veterans program — a very moving program, from Doug and Randy.

• Barb and Buzz Hjelter for delivering things to the nursing homes from the DAR.

Onions to …

• an ice cream shop on National Road for not honoring veterans.

• the outlet mall that says I can’t park there on my lunch hour and read a book and relax, or take a nap because they have a no loitering policy, and it’s for shoppers only — well you bet I won’t be back there.

• the mayor and city officials for continuing to have a highly-paid private consultant about the FairOaks project when the MKSK firm is hired to do all the work of re-purposing the mall.

• those who don’t realize Nov. 19 is the only day all legislators are required to be at the Indiana Statehouse, so this is why teachers are going to be there.

• the tennis players and spectators for ignoring the no parking signs and parking on the bike lane on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.

• people who buy into the excuse it will cost $11 million to renovate the Crump when other small towns like North Vernon have done similar renovations for under $2 million.

• the BCSC administration for keeping the school corporation open on Nov. 19 despite the issues it will cause for understaffed schools.

• the political party leadership for the excuses and lack of leadership resulting in poor election results.

• those who would not admit that the Democratic win in the election was actually a vote against a mayor who was only elected by 18.65 percent of voters for the city elections.

• the city for worrying about a little property and not doing anything about the eyesore on the west side of Columbus.

• the state trooper who pulled out too far on 25th Street and turned on his lights just to get across the street –- an abuse of power.

• the flashers on County Road 500 when it’s not the cross traffic you have to worry about, it’s those trying to pass on 25th Street.

• Bartholomew Consolidated Schools for canceling school at 5:30 a.m.

• the person running on the bike path on Tipton Lakes Boulevard on an icy freezing morning.
