Student nominated to U.S. service academy

Evan Patterson of Columbus received a nomination from U.S. Sen. Todd Young, R-Indiana, for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Young announced his nominations for U.S. service academy appointments on Nov. 15. More than 144 students applied for the nominations, and a select group was interviewed by an advisory board chosen by Young.

Patterson, a senior at Columbus North High School, was among 42 young men and women from across Indiana who received a nomination from Young.

A nomination does not guarantee admission to a service academy, but is required in order to be considered. Nominees are chosen based on personal merit. Criteria considered include evidence of character, leadership, academic excellence, physical aptitude and extracurricular activities.
