A local woman who was arrested on a warrant after a traffic stop was charged with additional drug-related offenses after she told investigators she had methamphetamine and marijuana hidden in a body cavity when told she would be scanned at the jail.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Bush stopped a vehicle at 11th and Franklin streets at 7:52 p.m. Monday, deputies said.

The passenger, Rebecca Roberts, 50, Columbus, was found to have an outstanding parole warrant, deputies said. Roberts also listed an address of 731 Main St. in Hope, according to jail records.

K9 Diesel alerted to the presence of narcotics during the traffic stop, however, none were located inside the vehicle. Bush asked Roberts if she had narcotics on her person to which she did not respond, deputies said.

After being told that she would go through the jail’s body scanner, she told deputies that she had methamphetamine and marijuana hidden inside a body cavity, deputies said.

Following clearance from Columbus Regional Hospital, Roberts was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of the warrant, possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana, deputies said.

“All incoming inmates are now screened for contraband by going through a full body imaging machine,” said Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers. “This scanner has helped to cut down on drugs and other contraband being smuggled into the jail.”
