City employees Mike Pope and Bryan Burton held the community Christmas tree steady as other city employees and Frank's Tree Service employees set the conifer upright at City Hall Plaza in 2009. A star was added to the top of the tree for the first time. From The Republic archives

Snowy conditions snarled traffic and caused dozens of vehicles to slide off roads, including an empty school bus on its way to make the first pickup of the morning.

Arson was suspected in a fire that caused about $5,000 damage to the former Hartsville elementary school.

Columbus city officials agreed to ask the State Highway Commission to make Second and Third streets one-way only east of White River in hopes of cutting down on the high number of accidents.
