Two arrested after early-morning traffic stop

Two people were arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop by Columbus police officers early Monday morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m., CPD officers stopped a vehicle for a minor violation near Ninth Street and California Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers spoke with the driver of the vehicle, Brent V. Burnette, 35, of Bloomington and his passenger Jennifer L. Jeffries, 39, of Columbus.

A short time later, officers requested a police service dog to respond to the traffic stop and the canine alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle, Harris said.

While searching the vehicle, officers located methamphetamine inside the car, Harris said.

Burnette and Jeffries were patted down and officers located a pipe containing methamphetamine residue in Jeffries pants pocket as well as a straw containing methamphetamine residue is Burnette’s pants pocket, Harris said.

Burnette and Jeffries were placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where jail officers located methamphetamine and marijuana concealed in Burnette’s underclothes, Harris said.

Jeffries was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Burnett was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and trafficking with an inmate.
