BCSC offers free winter meals

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. will partner with Seamless Summer Option Food Service Program to provide free meals over the two-week winter break from school, beginning Monday and running through Jan. 3 with the exception of holidays and weekends.

Free breakfast and lunch meals will be available to all children age 18 or younger and to persons over 18 years old who are enrolled in a state-approved education program for the mentally or physically disabled.

The meals will be provided to all children with no charge and are the same for all participants. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

In Bartholomew County in 2017, more than 3,000 children under 18 years old weren’t certain where their next meal would come from, making a place where children and teens can get free meals during the winter break vital.

Food insecurity refers to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle for all household members. A 2005 study published in The Journal of Nutrition said that food insecurity puts children at risk for health problems, developmental delay and impaired school performance.

During this school year, nearly 5,000 BCSC children — more than 43% of the corporation’s total enrollment — are currently fed through schools’ free- and reduced-price lunch programs. The corporation also offers a summer food service program that takes care of students during the two-month-long summer vacation.

Meals will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis at Schmitt Elementary School, 2675 California St. on the following dates: Dec. 23, Dec. 26, Dec. 27, Dec. 30, Jan. 2 and Jan. 3. The school will be closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 28, Dec. 29, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Breakfast will be served from 8-8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. For more information, contact BCSC Director of Food Service Nancy Millspaugh at 812-376-4462.
