Services and studies

Dayspring Church Apostolic — Worship begins at 11:15 a.m. at the church, 2127 Doctors Park Drive, Columbus.

On Sunday, the church will be inspired by, “Knowing Our Identity in Christ.”

This is taken from Acts 2:21 where, “…whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Everyone will receive a free gift.

The Sunday education session starts at 10 a.m. and covers “Forsaking All to Follow Him,” as shared in Luke 5:1-11.

Bible Study is Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and is a group empowerment study sponsored by Heart

Changers International, LLC on grasping your God-given worth, with hand out questions. These help build personal empowerment.

Prayer of Power starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and is preceded with requests and instructions on prayer.

The Celebrate Recovery session starts at 6:30 p.m. for about an hour.

Ignite is the Youth Growth Session that happens every third Friday.

East Columbus United Methodist — Sunday events begin at 9 a.m. at East Columbus United Methodist Church at 2439 Indiana Ave. in Columbus, with fellowship time in the foyer with beverages and snacks. Worship begins at 9:30 a.m.

Sunday School begins at 10:40 a.m. for all ages and Bible interests.

First Presbyterian — The First Sunday of Christmas offers us the chance to look at the beginning of how Jesus began his ministry as an adult.

Marietta Macy will offer a sermon based on Mark 1:1-20. The band Livin’ by Faith will lead us in worship. Worship begins at 9:30 a.m., 512 Seventh St., Columbus.

Infant and toddler care is available 9:15 a.m. to noon. The men’s and women’s support groups meet on Fridays at 7 a.m., and a second men’s support group (working age men) meets every Monday at 6:15 a.m.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals offered Fridays at 5 p.m. (please enter through the glass doors on Franklin).

The church is a LGBTQ-friendly church, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist — On Sunday there will be one unified service at 10 a.m. Reverend Sarah Campbell will deliver the message, “2020 Vision” at the church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus.

The scripture will be Matthew 2:12-19. There will be no Sunday School; it will resume on Jan. 5. Childcare is available during the service.

Flintwood Wesleyan — Sunday morning activities will begin with breakfast from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. in The Friendship Center. A combined morning worship service will begin at 10 a.m. The service will be led by Rev. Wes Jones, senior pastor.

The Prayer Team meets at 8 a.m. There will be no Sunday school classes.

The church is located at 5300 E. 25th St.

Sunday evenings Celebrate Recovery begins with a meal at 5:25 p.m in The Friendship Center and the meeting starts at 6 p.m. upstairs in Curry Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Connections, a ladies’ study group, led by Pastor Teri Jones, meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 10 a.m. in The Friendship Center.

In the Beginning, a small group Bible Study, will not meet again until 6 p.m. Jan. 14. The group will start meeting in the basement of the church and is studying the book of Genesis. You can start at any point so new members are welcome to join.

Wednesday activities begins are postponed until Jan. 8.

On Thursday, Cub Scout Pack 588 will meet when events are scheduled and Boy Scout Troop 588 will meet at 7 p.m..

Garden City Church of Christ — Starting Jan. 5 at the 10 a.m. service, Garden City Church of Christ is hosting a four-week sermon series called “Reset.”

Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

The topics of the series include “Reset My Heart,” “Reset My Mind,” “Reset My Voice” and “Reset My Hands.”

Grace Lutheran — Pastor John Armstrong will preach on Sunday. Worship is at 8 and 10:30 a.m., with Sunday School for all ages at 9:30 a.m.

New Year’s Eve services begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

IFC Conversation Groups begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Petersville United Methodist Church — The Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will give her message, “Sunday After — Wonders of His Love: Compassionate Joy,” at the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday morning at Petersville United Methodist Church.

Scriptures from Isaiah, Psalm 148, and Matthew 2 will be shared by liturgist Patsy Harris. The children’s sermon will be given by Teresa Covert. A time of fellowship will follow the service.

St. Paul Lutheran — Pastor Doug Bauman will deliver the message, “Out Of Egypt I Called My Son” based on Matthew 2:13-23 at 8 and 10:45 a.m. at Communion services Sunday at St Paul Lutheran Church, 6045 E. State St., Columbus.

Christian education classes for all ages will be held at 9:30 a.m. The Spanish worship service of Lessons and Carols begins at 2:30 p.m. in the church.

A New Year’s Eve Communion service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church with Pastor Doug Bauman’s message entitled “Waiting and Then Celebrating,” based on Luke 12: 35-40.

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus — On Sunday at 10 a.m., Marion Dobbs will present “The Promise of the New Year,” focusing on looking back at 2019 while looking ahead to possibilities for 2020.

Westside Community — Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church at the corner of West State Road 46 and Tipton Lakes Boulevard.

The children’s program for birth through sixth grade meets at the same time as the 10 a.m. worship service.

Events

North Christian Church — In memory of former North Christian Church members Caroline and David Smith, the church is carrying on the Disciples Women’s Ministry holiday tradition of sending funds to the Church World Service Blanket Ministry, a mission to provide blankets to people in poverty or who’ve experienced displacement or disaster.

Christ Embassy Columbus Church — The church will host its awards night starting at 6 p.m. Sunday.

All are welcome to attend the evening, which will feature food, dancing, music and elegance It is free and open to the public.

First United Methodist — Tuesday evenings from From Jan. 5 to Feb. 25, FUMC will host a grief support group. Meetings will be gin at 5:30 p.m.

The group will explore grief using Julie Yarbrough’s book, “Beyond the Broken Heart: A Journey Through Grief.” It will take place in the Blue Room (Room 216) at the church, and is open to anyone. To register, or for more information, call the church office at 812-372-2851.

On Jan. 20, the church will host the seventh annual First Cares event. From 9 a.m. until noon, volunteers will do work in and for the community. There will be opportunities to help church members stuff homemade animal pillows and tying blankets, or help clean at the Turning Point shelter. Anyone is welcome to help during this morning of service.

On Jan. 26, FUMC will host its first Life Planning Seminar. Possible topics include end-of-life planning, assisted living and funeral planning, and financial planning topics like retirement and college planning. There will be a dinner at 5:15 p.m. with the session to follow at 6 p.m. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend.

St. Paul Lutheran — The Lutheran Women Missionary League will sponsor a Euchre Party on Friday at the church Fellowship Room beginning at 6:30 p.m. Beverages, cards and prizes will be provided for $5 admission with proceeds sponsoring a delegate to the LWML 2020 Convention in Fort Wayne. All are welcome.

A grief support Bible study entitled, “Hope When Your Heart Breaks” will begin at 2 p.m. Jan 6 in the church’s Conference Room. Those learning to live without a loved one are welcome.
