To celebrate the first baby born at Columbus Regional Hospital in 2020, Child Abuse Prevention of Bartholomew County has teamed up with local businesses to put together a basket full of goodies to give to the baby’s family.

The council, a division of Family Service, Inc., started gifting the baskets in 2019 after noticing that the tradition of celebrating babies born on New Year’s Day had slowly diminished, said Raina Jones, CAP Council co-chair.

The goal of the basket is to promote child and family well-being and healthy parenting.

The gift basket will feature several different newborn care items including a blanket, soap and a mobile, along with toys for the baby. Also included in the basket is education material for the parents and items for the mother to encourage relaxation.

“We want to promote the mindset that we’re all parents; we all need help and education,” Jones said.

Items were donated by Amazing Joe’s Grill, Papa’s Grill, The Tony London Company, Blondie’s Salon & Spa, AAA Striping and Dorel Juvenile Group.

The CAP Council, a chartered council of Prevent Child Abuse Indiana and an affiliate of Prevent Child Abuse America, strives to educate all residents of Region 14, including Bartholomew, Jackson, Johnson, Shelby and Jennings counties, about child abuse and neglect and to promote healthy alternatives and positive parenting practices.
