Basketball players achieve honors

Two Columbus North basketball players were named to All-Tournament teams last weekend, and two other area players have been selected as Indiana Basketball Coaches Association District 3 Players of the Week.

North junior Blake Barker was picked for the All-Noblesville Tournament squad after leading the Bull Dogs to a runner-up finish. Barker was joined on the All-Tourney team by MVP Caleb Furst and Marcus Davidson of champion Fort Wayne Blackhawk, along with Noblesville’s Jordan Gadis, Chesterton’s Travis Grayson and Northridge’s Sam Smith.

North senior Sierra Norman was named to the All-Columbus North Invitational team after leading the Bull Dogs to a fifth-place finish. Norman was joined on the squad by Madison Layden and Kendall Bostic of champion Northwestern, Makaya Porter and Yiesha Williams of runner-up Elkhart Central, Westfield’s Jessica Castor, Mooresville’s Paige Gregory, Evansville North’s Kaliah Neighbors, Zionsville’s Katey Richason and Jeffersonville’s Kiersten Poor.

Meanwhile, South Decatur senior Gage Walters and Trinity Lutheran freshman Bailey Tabeling are this week’s IBCA recipients for District 3, which includes most of the southern part of the state.

Walters recorded 35 points, five rebounds, seven assists and a steal in a 93-86 win against North White in the first round of the Edinburgh Tournament and added 26 points, seven rebounds, 11 assists and five steals in a 115-105 semifinal win against Hagerstown on Friday. In Saturday’s final, Walters had 12 points, five rebounds and 14 assists in a 94-66 win against Jac-Cen-Del.

South Decatur improved to 10-0 and is ranked No. 5 in this week’s Class 2A poll.

Tabeling recored 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals in limited minutes in a win against Clay City and had 22 points, three rebounds five assists and six steals in 53-35 win against Clay City Friday in Eastern Greene’s Toby Yoho Classic. On Saturday, she finished with 32 points, six rebounds and three assists in a 60-55 win against Edgewood and added 21 points and four rebounds in a 49-44 loss to Brownstown Central in the championship game.

Tabeling, who currently leads all freshmen with a 23.0 scoring average, won the District 3 girls award for the second time this season. Columbus East sophomore Koryn Greiwe also won the District 3 girls award earlier this season.

Teams hosting tourneys

Three area schools are hosting basketball tournaments this weekend. Columbus North will host a boys event Friday and Saturday, and Brown County and Edinburgh are hosting girls tourneys on those two days.

The Hauser and South Decatur girls will join the host Lancers in the eight-team Edinburgh Tournament. Play begins on Friday morning with Edinburgh facing South Decatur at 10 a.m., and Hauser meeting Indianapolis Lutheran at 11:45 a.m.

The Brown County girls will open its tournament against South Central at 10 a.m. Friday. The Columbus Christian boys will face Martinsville Tabernacle Christian in its tourney opener, also at 10 a.m. Friday.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Christian girls will travel to Martinsville Tabernacle for a tournament on Friday and Saturday.

East set for state duals

Columbus East will once again compete in the 3A portion of the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association State Duals on Saturday.

Action begins at 9 a.m. at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
